Several of the 1825 kits come with #10 tiles. Nothing seems to upgrade to them, however, or at least I can't figure out what does... so what does?

Thanks in advance.

As grey traces of dawn tinge the eastern sky, the three travellers, men of Willowdale, emerge from the forest's shadow. Fording the river, they turn south, journeying into the dark and forbidding lands of The Necromancer...

The #10 tiles do not upgrade anything. They are placed directly on the map hexes that are pre-printed in yellow with two city circles inside them.

hi

I understand the reply, but what about the OTHER green tiles with two circles on marked '40'.

Don't those go on the yellow spaces with two circles on as well?

And if so, why would you choose a 30 tile if you can have a 40 tile?

Or is this something to do with the way the value 30 tiles and 40 tiles upgrade in brown??

thanks

Yes, the #52 tiles also are permissible in the yellow double circle hexes. Note that their track network topology is slightly different from the #10 tile in that the connecting track to the two station circles is 120 degrees apart on the #52 tile and 180 degrees apart on the #10 tile. The #10 tile first appeared in 1829 and the #52 "style" of tile first appeared in 1830 (the actual tile number was #59). #10 tiles upgrade to #35, #36, and #37 tiles. #52 tiles upgrade to #64, #65, #66, #67, and #68. This second upgrade path offers a better payout with a different track network topology.

I imagine that the #52 path is used more often than the #10 path because of the higher revenue values.

Ed is right, but note that many of the upgrades for the #52 tiles cannot be placed in certain coastal hexes, most notably Cardiff/Newport (Unit 1), Newcastle/Sunderland (Unit 3) and Plymouth/Devonport (R2). If you use the grey tiles from the Phase 4 extension kit, this becomes even more apparent, and you can add Portsmouth/Gosport (Unit 1) to the list of affected hexes.

(I'm considering making a brown tile that adds track between Southampton and Portsmouth, as a variant, to get around that last example).
