I am an Art History Ph. D. Student specializing in Renaissance: I will buy this game.
I am a Art History Ph. D. Student specializing in Renaissance: what's up with the central image? Why not an actual fresco from the time period? Is there a story here? I mean no disrespect whatsoever for the artist. I understand that sometimes the use of straight up art (e.g. Court of the Medici) is not the best solution, but it does seem this would be the game in which one would go for it.
As a visual artist/designer, if a modest one, I can think of possible reasons: a photograph of an existing fresco surrounded by newly painted elements would most likely be inconsistent and look ugly, so that leaves reproducing one – making a painting of a painting – or designing an original one. It's a question of pinning down the setting to one actual cathedral vs. making it more universal and they've gone for the latter.
