I never thought I'd be in this position, but I just got handed this counter and have no idea where it came from. Any ideas? 1GG to the first person to figure it out.

Looks like a lot of things, but it's a die-punched 9mm-ish grey cardboard grey circle with black linen-finished surface on both sides, and the design shown on the top (punched) side.

edit. fixed word order.

Naha! That's why it looked so familiar and yet utterly unlike any actual game piece. Many thanks to you both!

Yep, definitely Ubongo. I have the exact bit shown in the original post in my Ubongo box (I didn't throw away the cutouts because they looked cool). However, I must admit that although the design is the EXACT same as the Ubongo bits in my box, the picture in the original post looks smoother on the edges than you expect for something punched out of cardboard. My bits are perfectly flat. The picture seems to have a raised shape to it that makes it look more like a button.

It's just the rounded edge you get on the cutting side of die-cut stuff. normally not so obvious, but the disc is quite small so it stands out.
