We gathered in a dimly lit sea shanty and played whilst the waves battered the walls of Jervis Bay. We had played the starter game the day earlier and we're all ready to give a full blown game a go.
Can't remember much about the game except that we thought paying tolls was cool - perhaps a monopoly thing. The game was good by way of the fact that we ALL thought that we were going to win at one stage or another. Unfortunately for a similar reason, alot of people didn't like it: When the lowest scoring player at board completion ended up winning, everyone felt cheated!
The scores at board completion time and end time were:
Captain Renee......59..(botanicals + 5)..........................64
Captain Anthony...46..(botanicals + 15 + 10).................71
Captain Quynh.....39..(botanicals + 15 + 10 + 5)............69
Captain Jed.........34..(botanicals + 15 + 15 + 10 + 5).....79
Thus, after botanicals the game scores had nearly completely reversed!
Everyone thought this was a little disappointing (even me!).
Other complaints levelled against the game were:
- Over biased towards huts!
- Tolls only last until the island is discovered!
- The toll aspect of the game should be increased!
- You should be able to build and drop scouts!
Perhaps lower the value of botanicals. OR get higher scores during the game Perhaps change the botanicals to 5/75, 10/75 and 15/75 (ie 1/15, 2/15, 3/15) of the highest score at board completion time.
Also perhaps have the option of leaving a fort standing after the island is discovered. Perhaps you can relocate, at the same cost, from that time on.
Perhaps increase the tolls for forts and settlements.
