Totally agree with you on this one Tom, very simple but excellent game !

I have the "3D" version where you have to build the board before playing:

Tom,

I love your reviews. I agree, this is a fun little game and very easy to DIY. The sumo version is very popular also. Too bad the ipod version vanished

You pronounce it in German! That's actually understandable, considering we are talking about a board games by a German doctor here... However, En Garde is French and could be approximated to "Have at you!"

Great review, Tom. This is a fantastic and underappreciated gem of a game.

Yep - great game!

To play competitively, however, card memorization is indispensable.

Since I don't like that, my home-made copy has a double deck of 50 cards, 25 of which are randomly selected for each round.

Instead, try playing with the original set, but keep the discards face-up in piles of 1s - 5s. That way, everyone can see what's been played so far in the round, and it's no longer just about who has the better card memory.

Normally a suggestion like mine has the downside of causing AP and slowing the game down, but with a game this simple, AP is not an issue.

Actually, that's exactly how we played it before it occurred to me to simply double the deck. This latter solution I like even better, because it allows for more surprises at the end of a bout.
