Are the stock certificates supposed to be a finite or infinite quantity?

I've been assuming that they are finite. Obviously if there are no certificates remaining, no player can buy that stock.

In my last session, we nearly exhausted the stock certificates of Stryker Drilling. Only 40 shares remained unpurchased in Year 10. Had the stock split, there would not have been enough shares left to issue everyone the shares they were due.

What happens when a stock split exhausts the supply of a particular stock, and additional stock certificates are still needed to resolve the split?

Why not just Reverse Split if you run out of certificates?
