The marathon (26 miles) was run in 2 hours and 5 minutes.

This means that the runners sustained a pace of 4 minute 40 second miles.

For 2 hours.

I run 2-3 miles 5 times a week. When I'm really peaked and trained and feeling good, I can beat an 8 minute mile. I may have touched 7 minutes when younger.

If I run a strong quarter mile, I can do it in under 1:15. That still isn't remotely fast enough to come close in a single mile against these guys and there is no way I can keep that pace.

This is inhuman. I cannot conceive of these speeds.

Freakin mutants.

And don't forget about the rest who try out and miss the cut off time. they are just as crazy as those who do make the cut.

I had to do the math myself, because that time is simply jawdropping. But you're right: just under 5 minutes per mile for the winner. Incredible.

An ash I know, Yggdrasil its name. With water white is the great tree wet; thence come the dews that fall in the dales. Green by Urth's well does it ever grow.

A friend of my brother started running marathons just a few years back, soon after turning 30. Before that he was a smoker, drank, played videogames all day. Last year he came 28th in the London marathon. Now he has improved his fitness to the point where he is one of the best Brit marathon runners, and for the first time is in the top 100 runners of the London Marathon this Sunday (which means he gets his name on his shirt instead of a number, and starts with the professionals). When they have mini marathons locally, he'll run a mini marathon first as a warm-up.

His philosophy is that if you're tired at the end of a marathon, you're not fit enough!

Yeah, I used to run almost a 7:30 minute mile. For about 3 miles, tops (a 5k race).

These days, after a 6 year break in running and now only running once a week, I'm just barely shy of a 9 minute mile.

But 4:40? For 26 miles straight? That's almost double the speed I'm running now! It'd be easier for me to jump 15 feet into the air than do that.

I wonder what their stride length is. It must be like loping long jumps or something.

I attended Boston University when this occurred. Soon thereafter everyone was hosting Rosie Ruiz parties -- you didn't have to be there at the beginning, so long as you were there at the end.
