I'm looking for a (preferably) 2 player game for my girlfriend and I to play. We're not looking for something super rules intense, but something we can play with a 30min - 1 hour playtime.

Games we like:

Carcassonne (and the excellent Xbox live version of this game)
Guillotine
Uno
We both got into Magic the Gathering for awhile but quit that as soon as we figured out that you've got to keep buying the expansions.

So we're casual board gamers. But I'd like to change that. I grew up playing a lot of the standard Monopoly, Crainium, Scattergories fair but I'm excited to delve a little deeper into board gaming.

I played Dungeons and Dragons all throughout junior high and high school and loved it. My love of the game still remains to this day but unfortunately because its such a huge time commitment I'm unable to play. But I LOVE the entire fantasy genre/setting, so any game that works into that would be great.

Thanks!

How about Dominion?

A fantasy themed card game with easy to follow rules.

Suddenly a shot rang out! A door slammed. The maid screamed. Suddenly a pirate ship appeared on the horizon! While millions of people were starving, the king lived in luxury. Meanwhile, on a small farm in Kansas, a boy was growing up.

Blue Moon might work well for you.

It is roughly the same type of game as Magic, but constrained to pre-built decks [although there are expansions, they are quite finite, and pre-set rather than random boosters].

I did a little research here.

How about Small World?

Seems like it could run kind of long and might be a little too complicated.

Long yes. Boring yes. I don't understand why this is so highly rated. Don't care for it.
How about Vikings or Stone Age?

as far as D&D in an hour maybe try Dungeoneer. It can be pretty intense as you race for that last quest.

Both fine suggestions. You might also try Pillars of the Earth or Oregon.

Agree with the suggestion, but definitely NOT fantasy themed.

Carcassonne: The Castle is an excellent 2-player version of Carcassonne.

Lost Cities. Classic game for two. Inexpensive.

Hive. One of our favorite 2-player games. Simple rules, complex strategies. Plays anywhere, and not too pricey.

Our family likes Small World but I think as a 2-player game, it falls short of some of the other recommendations here.

By the way, welcome to the Geek.

Cartagena or Cartagena II and by all means, Thurn and Taxis. My wife and I are new to gaming and love T&T, and Cartagena (we have "II") is fun and quick.

I'm a big fan of Puerto Rico, not so crazy about the two player variant.
Lost Cities is the wives favorite game.

These are all great suggestions. Keep em comin'!

Anyone have any recommendations for an online retailer that sells all these gems?

I live in Los Angeles and the only respectable board game store I found was Game Empire in Pasadena. But thats a drive for me from where I live on the west side. Anyone know of any other good game shops in SoCal?

Given the games you liked and the fantasy theming, I too would vouch for Blue Moon.

Hm, lighter games with a 30-60 minute playing time, preferable fantasy theme.

Here you go:

Thunderstone
Ghost Stories
Blue Moon
Blue Moon City
Cave Troll
Colossal Arena
Munchkin
Fearsome Floors
Friday the 13th
Fairy Tale
Kingdoms
Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation

Not fantasy themed, but good:

Lost Cities
The Adventurers
Citadels (medieval theme)
To Court the King (sort of medieval theme)
Guillotine
Ticket to Ride
Pandemic
Dominion (medieval theme)
Tobago
Stone Age
Alhambra
Thurn and Taxis
Hey! That's My Fish!
Thebes
Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age
Can't Stop
Cartagena

Recommendations by others here that I do NOT agree with (too long and heavy, per your criteria):

Puerto Rico
Pillars of the Earth

Small World and Dominion are definitely my recommendations for fast, easy to explain, fantasy-themed games that scales well to 2 players.

a 45 to 60 minute game is long? that's for 5 players. for 2 players, it's generally more in the 20-something minute range (not counting the first game).

Is this really a problem? Other BGG'ers talk about using pre-constructed decks, and they're what, $10 a pop? Not too bad. Or, you could always buy a big box of 5000 commons off Ebay for about $100 - in fact, I'm sure you could get some bad rares in there too.

Someone recently talked about the merits of preconstructed decks here:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/4875212#4875212

Is the continued investment required by Magic such a bad thing? If you get enough gameplay for your buck, then what's the problem? Note: I would never advocate buying booster packs - I haven't done that in probably a decade, unless you count doing a tournament draft at a FLGS. My point is, you can keep getting new Magic cards for cheap if you're OK with not buying tournament quality rares.

I'm going to vote against Dominion, simply because the 2 women I know of that have played this weren't too thrilled about it.
Tobago and Race for the Galaxy on the other hand I'd go with.

Small world is OK for 2players and terrible for 3 players if someone gets the treaty power.

I can't find Blue Moon anywhere but it's been on my list for a while.

I Disagree with Puerto Rico as a 2 player game, and would strongly go against Lost Cities. Phase 10 is better IMO and can be found easily, or if perhaps even Coloretto. I still haven't made my mind up about that one.
