Me and my girlfriend go out to friend's places and the group of us want to play a game. It can't be to complex since the majority of us are newbies. So far we have played Bang! and Settlers of Catan. I need some recommendations for our party (usually 4 - 6) that would keep everyone interested.

There are surely loads of good games for 4 people. But 2 couples that aren't hardcore gamers? We just love to play TAC then. Don't know how easy it is to get a copy in Canada though...

I would strongly recommend Time's Up! and any of the others in the series. I have heard that Title Recall is particularly good. It should be noted that one does not need to purchase Time's Up, but you can simply look up the rules and play it with Apples to Apples cards or the cards to some other game with a list of words on cards.

Sometimes the obvious choice is the best one: Ticket to Ride.

TTR would be great. Maybe also Tichu?

I am proud to have opposed those who describe all who oppose them as "Tender Flowers" and "Special Snowflakes".

Agreed--in my experience, less experienced game groups usually involve at least one person who is turned off by cutthroat play. Though the rules additions are minimal enough that TtR:E is still easy to learn, they avoid some of the problems with that which crop up in TtR: Original Recipe.

This was the game I immediately thought about when reading the title of the post. Seconded.

I've tried Frank's Zoo in a group of six (three couples), and it turned out to be amazingly successful. Except my wife and me, all of them were new to gaming. But the rule was simple enough for them to catch up easily. I recommend the 2:2:2 team-play format, and go without hedgehog/lion scoring rule.

Cloud 9, Pick Picknic, and Dixit were equally successful in similar occasions.

For four only - Ingenious.

For 6, maybe Hoity Toity or Unnamed Object. I can't think of any 6-player partnership games.

I'd recommend http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2604/compatibility
It's been a lot of fun when we've played it with a group of couples.
I'm not sure how available this one is though, I don't recall seeing it in stores. A quick check of froogle.com shows it available online at a few places.

Another one that usually goes over well with a group of non-gamers is http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2381/scattergories
I've seen this in Walmart and Target, so this one should be easily available.

Have fun!

g. Liar's Dice (always a staple)
h. Therapy

Think about:

* Bohnanza (plant beans and become famous)
* Great Dahlmutti (better with 5 or more)
* Xactika (thinky trumping card game)
* Saboteur (you always wanted to mine for riches)
* Pickomino (quick and light)
* 6 Nimmt or variants
* Station Master (make up trains and get out of the station)
* Acquire (oldie, but goodie and easier than it seems)
* Circus Flohcati (3 to 5 players)
* Condotierre (take over Italy)
* Elfenland (2 to 6 players, gorgeous board and you get to ride elf cycles)
* Wizard (trick taking card game)

Tichu is ideal with four. It plays six as well, though few people report how well it plays.

With six you can play Sticheln.

GiftTRAP should be good with couples as well.

A game that is great to be played with couples (that is, an even number of men and women), but requires 6 to 8 people (to be good) is Martinis & Men

Stone Age

and if the players are mostly the same week to week, Agricola is well worth investing the time to learn.
