I thought the email thing at the bottom of my wishlist (not wants list) would export it, but it just sends an invite to look at the list.

Can someone please show me how to export my wishlist? I want the title, year, publisher and preferably the designer, in a format I can sort later, maybe a csv. The average rating too would be fab.

And no, I don't know XML.

Puhlease help meee! I need it to prepare for Essen. I'll give you some gold. Some. Not much, because I could sit here and cut and paste it if I wanted.

And the list is here...

Thank you thank you thank you.

BGG Export
Use http://www.boardgamegeek.com/exportdb.php3 to get a CSV file of everything in your collection, selecting your favourite fields including Wishlist. You can put that in pretty much any spreadsheet program. Depending on the program, you will have different options for selecting entries that are actually on your wishlist (worst case, sort by that column so that you can delete all the non-wishlist stuff with one action).

Minimal method and note
I tested on my own collection with BGGID, title, wishlist, alternate names and publishers. Using grep ',"1"' collection I get the following list:

"12","Ra","1","Rio Grande Games","Alea","999 Games"
"9625","Struggle of Empires","1","Warfrog"
"11335","Bazar der edlen Steine","1","Agadir","LudoArt"

Note how the number of columns depends on the number of publishers and alternate names. A bit icky, with no way to tell a publisher from an alternate name.

Thanks Michael, but I get a csv that includes all the games I own plus the wishlist. Are you doing something to sort the list after, to filter out the wishlist games?

I tried the same choices as you did, bggid, title, wishlit, titles, publisher, but not owned, but it gives owned games in the result.

Am I missing something here? Surely if you don't tick owned it doesn't include them?

As Michael said it, once you exported your collection it will export all the items in it, selecting OWN will only add the field OWN in the export list.
Now open your CSV with Excel, put your cursor underneath the wishlist title cell (it should be J2), now press CTRL-A (to select all) and click on "Sort Ascending" (the A -> Z icon). Scroll down the list and at some point you should start having 1 in the column wishlist, from that point on all your wishlist should be at the bottom part of the list.
Hopes that helps

Wishlist only
It dumps not just everything that you own, but everything that you ever touched with the collection box on a game page. However, if you have `Wishlist' checked then one of the columns shows a 1 for Wishlist games. Put the data into a spreadsheet and remove all the lines without the 1 in that column. There may be a perfect way to do this (depends on the software that you use), but in any spreadsheet you should be able to sort with that column as a key so that all of the wishlist items are beside each other, making it trivial to delete everything else.

If you don't include non-wishlist true/false columns and have the program grep (standard on Unix), then you can use the approach that I mentioned in a previous reply as a quick hack, too.

Thanks for the help. I found the filter button on my OO spreadsheet and that does the same trick.

I think I get it now. The tickboxes merely choose which columns will be included, but it still exports the whole collection. Ticking Wishlist and not Own will still show the games I own, but not that column, so I can't filter Own if I wanted this time. Gotcha.

Thanks for the help Michael. How much GG would you like? Or shall I donate it to a cause you espouse?

BTW, does anyone know about Open Office Calc? I really need some help with that.

Cheers,
Jon.

Open Office has windows and mac (and..) versions as well as linux. It's worth getting if for no other reason than it's PDF export feature. www.openoffice.org

I'm no expert, but what problems are you having with OO Calc?

db
I was using Lotus Approach 97 as my home db for games. I built it up nicely and relied on it mainly to track what I hadn't played yet and what games needed english rules getting. I had a nice set of macros to give me various results and was very pleased with my work.

I've got a new PC on Windows XP (yeah yeah) and was told the old db wouldn't run although I've not installed it to check!

I've installed OO and I now understand that databases and spreadsheets are now one thing, so I've tried using Calc to import my old db and continue. I had a lot of trouble understanding the terms used, the idea of a data source and so on. I read the OO forums where people had the same problems and learnt I needed to import my file as a dbf.

This done, I can read the old db file, but not write new records. If I write a new line in the spreadsheet, this is recorded but not in the database. And my old db had dropdown menus, radio buttons and checkboxes, all of which I've lost. The new db has every field as a text field. I followed the instructions on how to alter fields, by editing a table, but it didn't work and seemed to keep saving version after version of the file.

I really don't want to write a new db in Calc but I'm quite prepared to play around with examples to understand it. But I'm quite frustrated with it and suspect it is buggy. I suppose I could go and a book on the subject.

But BGG is swarming with geeks and I'm hoping someone will have the patience to walk me through this.

If so, please write to me using jon.power@gmail.com It's much easier to follow threads on gmail. And I have 3 invites if you want one to help help me!

There's more! I exported my BGG collection some weeks back, and applied filters, which worked for the first hundred lines or so, then the data became mixed again. How can the filter ...er....not filter?

I do understand dbs roughly and I realise I'm a few years behind now, but Calc really baffled me. I just can't make sense of it.

Cheers,
Jon.
