I try not to have my family members put down, even if they react poorly to non-cubic polyhedral dice. The vet bill would be enormous.

I wouldn't think the dice are the problem. It may be that your family associates them to certain types of games, based on their experience. I myself don't know many family-friendly games that use a d12 or d20 (I actually remember just one, Aquädukt, which uses a d20).
