Hi fellow geeks,

i'm looking for some 3 player games that is exceptionally good with 3 players. I'm not looking for games that can be played with 3 players (almost every game is), but i'm looking for one that is really the most enjoyable when played with only 3 person.

example of games that i have found that met my criteira are:
After the flood
The End of the Triumvirate
Maria

do you have any other recommendations or geeklists for such games? thanks!

Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries - also good with 2
Hansa Teutonica - excellent with 3

Although I have not yet played this game, I have heard that it is best with 3:
Vikings

I have not played them myself, but The Bottle Imp and Cosmic Eidex are supposed to be outstanding with 3 players (indeed, Cosmic Eidex only works with 3).

Other games that I prefer with 3:
Acquire
Bohnanza (much faster than with 5-6)
Wyatt Earp

One of the best three-player games out there is Ra. It does well with 4 or 5 as well, but it's the strange type of game that actually sticks its landing best when there are 3.

Because of the time it takes to play, I rather play Through the Ages with 3 people.

Wnen we have 3, we currently play Nefertiti, Arkadia, Stone Age, Vikings, Maori, and Alhambra.

All work well...not sure which work EXCEPTIONALLY well. Depends upon taste I guess.

Oh, and I like Agricola and Brass best with 3 as well.

I can confirm that The Bottle Imp is very good with 3, especially if you like trick-taking games...

Fresco fits perfectly well as a 3 player game. The map board is two sided. The front side is for 4 players and the back side for 3 players. And it can be played by two players.

Stone Age rocks with 3 players.

Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization is great if all players want a deep strategy game (4+ hours)

Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries is tight and excellent with three. Also consider Pinochle, a terrific three player card game.

Agree with many of the recommendations, particularly that Vikings is at its best with 3.

Would comment though that the O/P has listed fairly heavy games as fitting his criteria - do you want heavy games, or is just that the 3 listed are pretty much 3-player only games?

Another game that I think is at its best with 3 is Notre Dame. Due to the card passing mechanic, with 3 players you can influence all of the players with what cards you pass - with 4 or 5 players you can't.

Heavy game or semi heavy game would be preferred. In fact, my group's favorite games is powergrid and RftG. We play some TI3 too, so you have a feel about the weight we like

so TTR is not that suitable for what i'm looking for. For the card trick taken game, i still like to buy one of them so that it can be a fast 3 person filler when a friend is late for the game day.

thanks for all the inputs!

an update on my purchasing decision in case you guys are curious:

i bought

1) vikings as a main game when we only have 3 players for a games day.
2) TTA since it has been on my wishlist for ages and i'm convinced that 3 and 4 players are both excellent to play with.
3) Decktet for all other trick taking fillers I require.

unrelated to the quest for 3 players game, i've also bought the following as it was on sales:

1) TransAmerica (for nostalgic reasons)
2) Small World
3) Ubongo
4) Fairy tale as filler

thanks so much for all the recommendations! i would not have discovered vikings if not for you guys. the theme and game cover is seriously not attractive to me. but the game play seems neat!
