Only recently opened up my copy of TS that I purchased a month or so ago. I'm interested to know if anyone else has experienced some issues with the game board, namely stains and printing issues as per the photos:

You may shake your head at this, but that's how the map looks - it was the artist's design.

I don't think I would have noticed this without BGG.

Actually, I think I did notice it at some point, but I assumed it was a UFO casting a shadow on the map. It fits in with the mystery of the Cold War.

It's true; the crescent stain is there on purpose. I contacted GMT about it and they confirmed that it was part of the artist's design. They also acknowledged that they'd received a lot of complaints about it.

I thought this at first too when I opened it mainly because my map came with a torn/missing corner (north east side). I at first assumed they packaged a returned map, complete with stains, but realized it was part of the artwork.

As for the missing corner I do find it irritates me when I notice it just not enough to try and return it or complain. I just hope it doesn't "grow" or prevent a potential trade if I ever decide to get rid of it.

1960 has some similar art, but it makes a lot more sense on that board/with that theme.

Reminds of the cards of the game NJET! They have similar stains which ought to represent the sloppy cheap Russian communism designs. I like it, though!

Well blow me down and roll me over three times. Still looks like a printing goof up to me, conveniently described as artistic license

I appreciate the quick response and the allaying of my fears that I received the only copy that the publisher decided to test run with some of the GMT factory workers over a lunch break while drinking with large coffee mugs...

Then again maybe I'm too cynical, and a lot of black coffee was consumed in the White House and Kremlin during the cold war with the hand poised over the big red nuclear'launch'nuclear button.

You can see the stains on the gameboard image on the back of the box.

I'm more concerned why it seems like the Japanese Rising Sun flag is embedded into the background of the Soviet Union. CONSPIRACY!

I think pre-stained boards will be the next great thing in gaming. It gets all the drink spill anxiety out of your system so you can just enjoy playing the game!

It'd probably help if you didn't set your coffee down on it.

Whether it's a good design choice, that's pretty great implementation if it tricks folks into thinking it's a real stain on the board.

Thematically speaking, what are all those cubes doing in the 1960 coffee mugs? Maybe Nixon took his with a LOT of sugar?

That's Kennedy's mug that's pictured.

He was usually looking for a little sugar in his bowl, IIRC.

It's similar to this Twilight Struggle map, which also includes simulated stains:

I think you have hit on something here. Take note publishers. In addition to the usual information on game boxes eg "60-180 min" and "3-6 players" the box should also advise if "pre-stained playing surface".

This could really hurt the second hand market though, everything would be sold as new.

Its like buying a pair of "pre-ripped" jeans.

I never honestly think about the stain art (that sounds like an oxymoron) because whenever my son and I play TS, we always keep the deck of cards covering it. Just happens to be a good place for the card deck.
