Just a quick note that the Spielfrieks Yahoo user group has begun the process of selecting its Meeples Choice Award winners for 2009. This week, the 25 nominees are being chosen. So if you belong to the group and would like to participate, head on over to Spielfrieks and cast your vote.

Every year, the group picks its three favorite games from the previous calendar year and declares them their Meeples Choice Award winners. If you don't belong to Spielfrieks, but would like to join, just send an email to spielfrieks-owner@yahoogroups.com and you should get an invitation within a couple of hours.

Sure thing, that was easy enough

Stronghold
Imperial 2030
Hansa Teutonica
Mr. Jack in New York
Last Train to Wensleydale
Power $truggle
Shipyard
Campaign Manager
Tobago
A La Carte

(although I was tempted to include Macao and/or Richard III in there and bump out one or both of the bottom two)

and if you didn't hate expansions so much Larry then we could recognize the greatness of Pandemic: On the Brink... but at least you didn't relegate Imperial 2030 or Mr. Jack in New York to the expansion waste bin.

Oh and for anyone curious about the somewhat checkered past of the Meeples Choice Award, the award in the past has gone to:

2008: Dominion, Pandemic, Le Havre

2007: Race for the Galaxy, Agricola, Brass

2006: Blue Moon City, Thurn and Taxis, Yspahan

2005: Caylus, Louis XIV, Shadows Over Camelot

2004: Ticket to Ride, Power Grid, Goa

2003: Santiago, Attika, Amun-Re

2002: Puerto Rico, Age of Steam, Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation

2001: San Marco, Wyatt Earp, Royal Turf

2000: Carcassonne, Citadels, Princes of Florence

1999: Lost Cities, Ra, Union Pacific

1998: Through the Desert, Elfenland, Samurai

1997: Bohnanza, Tigris & Euphrates, Showmanager

1996: Carabande, Entdecker, Expedition

1995: Settlers of Catan, El Grande, Medici

Thanks for listing the previous winners, Tom.

By the way, I had nothing to do with determining which games were true expansions and which were standalone games. I simply used the Geek's top rated games of 2009 as a guide. So it's the powers that be at the Geek (possibly including you) who decided that 2030 and MJ-NY belonged and OtB didn't.

That list of past winners reads like a listing of my absolute favorite games. There are few in there I don't like, but if I simply owned all those games and no others, I'd have a great collection.

I just voted and it was very very difficult. It matched my impressionistic sense of 2009: No games at all to compete with Through the Ages or Princes of Florence for a coveted spot on my all-time classic list. But a LOT of very strong games. My first run through I voted for 15 games that could simply not be left off my ballot and then I had to go back and cull hard.

Cull hard! should become a new phrase meme.

This seems like an awesome dataset for someone to mine.

Can we cluster people based on their responses to the MCA initial voting, or is it that most people have only played 10-15 games they really liked from the batch, but we all played different ones, in which case it is more luck plus the better distributed games.
