It's a piece of the hulk. The skulls are both real and decorations. That's how the Imperium of man rolls.

Nothing makes you feel more secure when hurtling through the void of space like a spaceship decorated with skulls. The skulls go well with the red velvet floor covering. Wait a minute, that's not velvet!

Dont know if its in the newer backgrounds.

But in the early editions of 40k 1000 psykers are sacrificed every day to keep the Emperor powered, the Emperor trapped at the threshold of life and death, doomed to endlessly battle all the chaos gods and hold back the warp by keeping a good portion of their attention and power elsewhere. And by the time of 40k. He's been at it 10000 years.

So yeah. They got skulls and bones to spare... (And maybee they act as a sort of psychic insulation against the warp? Thats a-lot of Psyker knoggins!)

That background is still present in the new editions. He's been at it for more than 500 years though, I believe.

Skulls for the skull throne? Bah, Khorne has nothin on the Emperor.

Everyone, in every incarnation of the warhammer univers(es) uses skulls as decorations. So it would be a rare occurance to find a spaceship which is not decorated by skulls.

Even the skeletons have skulls! zombie

Well... except for the ones that were taken to use as housing insulation on 40k ships. Possibly why there are so many irate undead out there...

It's over 500 years for sure. How about 10,000 years...

10000 it indeed is. Just dug out my 2nd Ed book and read through it. Seems the 500 years was a miss reffrence as elsewhere its consistently says 10k years.

Add in the skulls of all the heretics they off daily and they could likely make a fair sized moon from the skulls...
