When I saw sodaklady's post about an epidemic, I thought the topic was something different: the miserable cold that I've been fighting for the last two weeks! My energy level is zero--I'd lose to the Bush twins in a slapfight, if that unlikely scenario were to suddenly occur. My throat is affected, so I alternately sound normal, then like a hung-over Orson Welles. And it's now settling in my lungs. gulp

Well, enough of that disgusting portrait of poor health. Anyone else sick today?

Exactly how would you rate your cold? Is it life-threatening (10) or simply a hinderance (1)? Would it be easier to rate if you were able to get a macro look at your symptoms? Does it follow a well established pattern? Do more than one person share your particular view of this cold?

Enough... yuk

I rate your cold an 8. It sounds like the same thing I just had and I couldn't sleep for about a week due to an unrelenting empty cough. Cough. Cough.

on the edge
I've got the low-level lingering sore throat. It's not very painful, it just constantly says, "hey, remember me? I'm not quite right at the moment." I think I'd rather just get knock-down sick for a few days and be done with it. Just sit around and watch old movies and create a pile of gooey tissues next to the couch. As it is, I feel fine and my throat has just been complaining for a week or two.

The miserable, unrelenting empty cough is in the Northwest. My wife brought it back from the Midwest, but somehow I've avoided it up to now. Felt the virus factory cranking up in my nose on Sunday and hit it with some Zicam gel (which I'd never used before) and it seems to have killed it (for now). This is not a product endorsement. cool

After developing a sore throat Monday evening, today I have lost my voice. That's an unusual development for me, but I'll give a day to see which way it goes....

it started in the back of my throat
...on Sunday night. It's the quickest start to a cold that I can remember. I was in bed early on Sunday and by the next morning, it was full-on. I also experienced dizzyness, but that might be from the meds. Anyway, at least I got a sick day out of it.

I'm about a 5 while on allergy medication. It's not a cold but it feels like one. If I forget a dose you might as well forget about me accomplishing anything for a day.

Worse than ever, I'm starting to think about getting twice weekly booster shots.

I'm trying to envision Goo getting...well, more goo. Goo on goo action? I'm no xenobiologist, so I can't answer that one.

rodspade,

The lost voice lasts for 2 or 3 days before the empty cough sets in. You'll feel completely normal during the day, but as the night wears on, the cough comes on like a demon.

I wish I had any suggestions on what to do about it. Nothing I tried helped. Nyquil (i.e. "Magic Bullet") will buy you about two or three hours of sleep tho.

I started getting a low grade
headache and runny nose the day before a VERY IMPORTANT INTERVIEW. I found an assortment of prescription drugs in the medicine cabinet and took one an hour before the first VERY IMPORTANT INTERVIEW. Unfortunately, I didn't have my glasses on and took two Viagra* by mistake. I still had a runny nose and a headache but they seemed to think I was really interested in what they had to say at the first meeting and scheduled a second.

*Damn, there went both my free samples, too.

I get sore throats when I get stressed. I get sore throats when I'm sick. I get sore throats when the Santa Ana winds blow through Orange County here. I can't win. I once had a sore throat for 3 months. The doctor just said, "sucks to be you." I never know if it's sick, stressed, or allergy flair.

Next time, I'll just pop some Viagra. If you're going to feel sick, might as well have a good time at it.

I've been low-level sick for about a month now, but I'm going to chalk that up to allergies.

"Best" cold I ever had: A debilitating cough that induced the doctor to prescribe for me the most potent cough syrup I've ever encountered (featuring codeine). It stopped my cough, but it stopped the rest of me too, particularly my brain.

During exam week.

Goo, my ears were burning...
again.

Disclaimer: Any comments I make about the personal use of Viagra are purely for humorous intent and bear no relationship to my....uh....relationships.

Having said that I truly have been congested, watery-eyed, fatigued, hoarse and endlessly dry mouthed thirsty during an absolutely critically important few days.

OTC meds
I've used that Zicam stuff before. It actually works if you start taking it immediately. But do not stop taking it for at least 48 hours after you're sure you're all better, or else the cold comes back like a freight train.

I haven't been able to bring myself to use it recently, though, because I saw a few reports that people had permanently lost their sense of smell by using it (this is the nasal gel). I think it's probably not much more than a rumour, and I have used it successfully before with no ill effects, but I'm chicken.

I've taken these effervescent tablets called "Airborne" with my colds lately; they seem to help minimize the symptoms and duration.

Scrib, that was hilarious. I won't ask how they detected your, er, interest level.

Is Zicam a new product?
All of a sudden, everyone's talking about it. My local drug store only had the spray, but I'm using it anyway. My sense of smell is already poor, so what the hell?

I often times lap into devious thoughts about the 'fairer' sex. This seems to occur directly proportional with work level stress.

These thoughts can become quite detailed, and I find I've often times lost 15 minutes in the day when one fantasy gets full blown temporal dedication.

I'm feeling it today. I been using the Chloraseptic throat spray which helps a lot, drinking lots of water (moreso than normal which keeps me peeing every five minutes), taking zinc tablets, and I'm gonna go to bed before 9pm tonight!
