When everyone is out of beans the auctioneer's choice is basically to either take a piece for him/herself OR give a piece to the person to the left correct?

I've been playing it with an auction variant similar to Dream Factory basically - the beans spent for auction go to the middle and then the pool is evenly distributed to those that didn't win. We also determine the turn order for choosing a block according to who won the last auction.

Having it as a closed economy auction system makes for some slightly more aggressive bidding and allows people to come back from the "ugh, I'm out of beans" thing.

in our 1st game yesterday when it was down to 2 players, both without beans surely, by following the rules, a player cannot keep passing (horrid) red pieces to the other & keeps starting since he is to the left? We just ignored this rule when down to 2 players, each taking alternate turns
