We were aware of abandoning and the idea was talked about as the stalemate went on... but the troll didn't want to give up his spread out merchant seeing how Trolls are really a defensive race with their lairs.
The elves didn't want to do so because the Trolls were still earning a lot of points in the round and didn't want to take 2 rounds to equal back up to him.
An idea of declining was brought up by both Halfling and Elves... but the available Race/Power combinations really didn't favor the idea. Don't remeber all the combinations on the board but the first one was Cursed Goblins which would have been useless only yourself is in decline and there was no big treasury on Cursed.
I'm sure there were a few things earlier in the game that could have or should have been done to prevent it... but everyone became very stable with thier position.
I agree, and should have been shaken up. The static points being gained would have shown that the Troll would win at game end, making it incumbent on the Halflings and Elves to not accept the status quo, at least enough to make the trolls inviable, regardless of the short-term loss.
