Lee, keep at it! I predict that you will enjoy the game more and more as the various strategies (and blends of strategies) start to crystallize and clarify in your mind. After flailing about a bit myself at first when overcoming the learning curve, RftG is now easily one of my favorite games and keeps me captivated as I explore new strategies.
