Recently I got a message in my Inbox here in the geek that surprised me a bit. At the time, I was running the first round of BGG Zendo, so I thought it was probably related to that, and if not that, then possibly someone wanting to trade for one of the games in my collection. Turns out it was from someone who registered here apparently for the purpose of contacting me. I guess some Google search turned my name up here.

In another lifetime, I used to write free software of the GPL variety. Six years ago, I wrote a little library that didn't get used a lot, but might be handy for people in a very specific situation, and released it on my website. Time being what it is, my copy of that software succumbed to bitrot, my email address changed and my life moved on such that I don't spend time writing software outside of my day-job.

But this guy managed to track me down through the geek and told me that he wanted to maintain that six-year old codebase and improve it. I thought this was cool -- not only that the code lives on, but also that the geek has the potential to bring people together that would otherwise be out of contact.

Thanks Derk and Aldie!

Actually, it starting to bug me how easy I am to find. Google my name and I get 5 pages of hits (my name's unique enough for me to be sure all the hits are actually me). About half is from BGG stuff! I went in and edited my profile to remove my last name, but my profile still shows my full name.

I got a PM here from an old co-worker who did a Google search and found me here. Quite surprising!

Only five pages? I get thirty-five. I think this means I have spent too much time online. Over half of the hits actually refer to the real me. Well, if you count all the spam selling cialis which quotes something I said a long time ago on slashdot. I presume they are doing that to get past automatic filters. I wonder if I could successfully sue those guys?

In any case, without BGG it would be hard to dig out contact info for me from all that mess.

Does anyone know if there is a way to edit your name in your profile?

I googled myself, and the first link is to "my" obituary, but a couple links down the page is a geeklist of mine. Yikes! What would the student loan collection people do if they knew about this?

A couple days ago, I got a note from someone here asking me if I was that guy in the L.A. airport who was from Brisbane (or something like that). I almost felt bad that I wasn't.

There's a semi-famous Justin Green who authored an underground comic back in the '60s or '70s. He still gets illustrations in magazines every once in a while and when I lived in New York I sometimes got phone calls for him. Every once and a while I get an email from his handler/agent/whatever directing me to send him any email meant for him. That's about as exciting as my life gets..

Having your email address on a website is the fastest way to get spam. They did tests. I read it on /., so it must be true.

So what you're supposed to do is make yourself a contact page and just send any email me type link there. Then on the contact page, you have a jpg with your email written out instead of text. It does mean folk have to actually type the address into their mailer, but hey, that's a handy filter right there. Guaranteed to reduce spam.

I just googled myself and I also got BGG as the first hit. Amusingly enough, the other hit that was actually me was a photo of me playing the CCG Shadowfist in the sealed deck tourney at GenCon 2000. cool

I'm Feeling Lucky
Heh! Try typing "Simon Hunt" into the Google home page, and hitting the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button. That's me!** (Ok, well, the picture was taken a few years ago, but it's still me).

(**At least, if it is the page at Magic Circle Theatre and it talks about "native England", then its me)

unfortunately had to give up autonomy a long time ago. Every once in a while i do a google search just to make sure I didn't say something really stupid because i was in a bad mood. on the other hand, i occassionally try to track down old friends and it can be a real struggle if they aren't integrated into the net.

So, Simon... I take it that's you on the lower right side of the page... the one wearing the red nose?

Hmmm, I guess you arrived at the "This is Shakespeare?" page? and not my "bio" page. Odd.

Fortunately for me there is a famous composer/musician who shares the same name as I do. Google buries me under pages and pages of hits by the composer guy. I'm sitting free and clear baby!
