If you're not going to use markers, laminating the course board and using dry-erase markers (a different color for each player, preferably) works remarkably well. I suggest marking the position of each car each turn and leave them up through the end of the lap. Following the course your car took is actually a great way to learn what you're doing right and what you're doing wrong--you can see where you went into a turn too fast, where you turned too hard or too gently, where you should have started slowing for a turn, etc.
