Hello,

While discussing card games on my recent geeklist I tried to find one that I play regularly but had forgotten the name of.

As this is a 'traditional' card game I went to http://www.pagat.com/ which has an amazing database of traditional card games but this didn't help me much - I still didn't know the name. Eventually I found it but it wasn't even on the database there!

Anyway, the point of that story is that it made me wonder if there wasn't space for CardGameGeek.com - not just for traditional games like Comet (the game I was trying to find) or Bridge, but all the card games on here masquerading as board games, such as Dominion and Innovation.

It seems time that card games got their own geek pedestal. Pagat might be a good resource if you know what you're looking for but after spending time on here for the past 7 months or so I feel the user experience is much nicer and easier. I guess that's because it's a community and not just a database.

What d you think? Has it been discussed before? Ad nauseum?! Did the admins say 'no way never'?

I wouldn't want a separate card game database. The boundary between card and board games is too blurred. Many games are obviously only one or the other, but many incorporate both, to varying degrees and in different ways. Trying to draw a line between them would inevitably be somewhat arbitrary and divisive.

And there would be no benefit from it. You can already search on the Card Game category.

I have to agree with Bryan. Drawing a line between the two would be tough. I also wouldn't want to have to search 2 different sites when looking for a new game to buy, just because the game may have cards in it.

The B's have it...

In this case, I'd just add the game to the database here and run with that!

Looks like my idea has fallen flat at the first post

I don't see why not. Pagat.com must be drawing enough hits to bother staying up and I'd certainly chat about card games.

Now that we have put that to bed, I would say it is time for

BarGameGeek.com to make an appearance.

...All of the Dart games & variations
...All of the Billiards games and variations
...Fusball
...Ping Pong
...Air Hockey

Add in the outdoor varieties with
...Lawn darts
...Washer boxes
...Ladder ball
...Bunnock Bones

Face it, Bar Room Games is an idea whose time has come.

I'd rather not see the split. Still think RPGs should be merged with the boardgames as well or at least some categories of them.
ie. not liking the fact that terrain, paper miniatures, paper buildings, etc. which I use with my tabletop games are on the RPG side of things...

However, Pagat was a regular company before the Internet came along, wasn't it? Pagat.com is just an extension of their business.

No idea whatsoever sorry! I only found them browsing for card games online before I found BGG.

I agree, though, with all the people who said that the line between board games and card games is way too fuzzy.

I would definitely hate to keep shuffling between the two...

For me, the line becomes far too blurry once you get past the easy ones: Bridge, Poker, etc. Card versus tile ends up being an implementation choice often times. Like for instance, Dominion is most efficiently played with a custom set of poker chips with labels on 'em and individual draw bags... ninja Not that I'm gonna put the time into that kinda thing, but just sayin'...

Why not entries for both where applicable?

Derk;

I know that I for one would much like a cardgamegeek.com site, if one existed. I would however suggest not separating the databases but linking them. So for example the cardgamegeek entry for Dominion would be the same page as on BGG. Basically I'm picturing overlapping databases rather than separate ones if possible.

I'm walking across the Golden Gate Bridge and I see this guy getting ready to jump. I figure I should talk him down, and I ask him why he wants to kill himself.

"Nobody loves me."

I reply "But God loves you. Are you religious?"

"Yes I am."

"Oh good. Are you a Christian or Jew?"

"A Christian."

"Me, too. Are you Catholic or Protestant?"

"Protestant."

"Me, too. Which denomination?"

"Baptist."

"Me, too. Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?"

"Northern Baptist."

"Me, too. Northern conservative Baptist or Northern reformed Baptist?"

"Northern conservative Baptist."

"Me, too. Northern conservative Baptist Great Lakes region or Northern conservative Baptist Eastern region?"

"Northern conservative Baptist Great Lakes region."

"Me, too. Northern conservative Baptist Great Lakes region council of 1879 or Northern conservative Baptist Great Lakes region council of 1912?"

He said "Northern conservative Baptist Great Lakes region council of 1879" and I screamed "Die heathen!" and I pushed him off the bridge.
