Many of you have probably already seen this but if you haven't here's a little heads-up.

If you type in the URL for BGG and actually mess up so that you type in www.boardgamegeeks.com (plural, instead of singular), you get redirected to a viable website.

It seems the folk over at CardChess (who already have a somewhat questionable reputation around here) either bought up the misspelled URL and linked it to their home page, or someone else did it for them. Either way, I've always thought "misspelled URL" advertisers to be delving into a fairly sleazy avenue of advertising, by basically trying to surreptitiously glom on to the popularity of the main website, without actually being advertised on or endorsed by the popular website. I know that personally, I will never buy from anyone that advertises like that. But that's just me.

I don't know if Derk or Aldie have any legal recourse, if they'd even want to exercise it. But I thought I'd let people know about it if they weren't already aware.

I have to admit that I thought all the lists/journals about this company I enjoyed mainly for the laughs, but this takes the cake.

What's even better is downloading their "media-kit," which appears to only be a pdf of the cover of each of their games. The marketing savvy at Cardchess continues.

The saga of the CardChess Folks just gets lamer and lamer - which also means funnier and funnier!!!

Typo-jacking isn't a really big problem, IMHO, as most of the time you know you've done something rather wrong, and are not in any way impressed by the errant page you've stumbled across.

So, no real harm, but lots of pathetic bang for my amusement buck.

I'm not sure how upset Derk (& Aldie) actually are about this but it seems to me that if they desired to take action, the easiest and best thing they could do would be to remove all games by that manufacturer from the BGG.

While this does involve an element of "self-mutilation", I think it would be very effective in preventing such tactics in the future. Further, I suspect that it would cause the manufacturer enough concern that he would consent to have the offending URL redirect to the BGG instead.

The use of such methods only makes me feel certain that shillking is full of cr*p, when he claims he never tried to boost the ratings on his game.

I think highly of you, Greg, but I think you underestimate the thoughtfulness, business sense, morality, and maturity of these guys.

They have absolutely none.

I've known some psychos in my time---real psychos. Not people that you just say "oh, he's just psycho". Those actually clincially suffering from an inability to be in touch with reality at all. These guys are just about there.

Psychos can be harmless and annoying from a distance. They're still psychotic, though.

I wrote a journal entry on these bungmonkeys jokingly, this comment is not.

CardChess or whatever you are, Your title of shillking should be revoked you are most obviously more deserving of the title LOSER. May your teeth rot slowly as you pan your little plastic pyramids for pennies on the cold streets of Ontario. Oh Canada why do you give us such crap, Celine Dion, skunky green bottle beer, and now Card Chess!!!

We should purchase several cardchess.com-like domain names (card-chess.com, cardches.com, cardchesss.com as mentioned earlier, etc) and direct them to a single page which reads:

"Do not purchase games from this company...you will be hounded incessently (sp?) to visit a non-partison site to rate their games highly--and if you don't do so, you will be badgered every day for the rest of your life. Really"

Then include a link to their lowest rated game on BGG.

I can assure you that this particular course of action has been discussed a number of times, with me wanting to delete it and Aldie swoopin' in to save it. I honestly don't recall the logic he used on me, but Aldie can be a tricky biznitch when wants to be... ninja

Actually, were their games removed, then new users wouldn't know just how underhanded they are nor how badly they are disdained by the community. With their ratings and contents intact, they'll continue to get what they deserve.

Which does kinda beg the question...

The folks here at BGG are generally a fairly knowledgeable bunch when it comes to games. The fact that we have available to use, thanks to Aldie and Derk's untold efforts, a database to research just about any board game ever made.

OK, so folks intending to go to BGG accidentally fat-finger the URL wind up at the CardChess site by accident. Maybe they've never heard of the games before. Maybe they even think that one of the games looks interesting.

If they know anything at all about BGG (which they obviously do, since they mis-typed the URL), they're going to come right back here and look up the game they're interested in. And from there, they'll quickly find out how sleazy the folks at CardChess are.

I don't see the logic in trying to associate yourself with a site that is openly hostile to your company's business practices.
