Ion Award Finalists!
The finalists of the Ion Award at SaltCON have been determined. Here they are:

Strategy:
Brett Hollbrook
Brian Kelly
Gregory Powers
Jerry Miller

Family/Party:
Andy Van Zandt
Dave Dobson
Dave Haslam
Thomas Alex Davis

Congratulations finalists. We'll see you at SaltCON.

Calling All Tabletop Game Designers * * * *

The Ion Award at SaltCON 2011 is back as the equivalent of the Sundance Film Festival of games in the U.S.

We want to evaluate your unpublished games.

The contest is in two phases. For the first phase, you will submit a form describing details of your game. You will also send us a picture of your game to guarantee that the game is complete at the time of submission. Your summary will be evaluated by the judges, with your name removed. They will rank their favorite games. The top 4 games with the highest scores will be invited to come to SaltCON 2011. You can personally officiate the playing of your game. This is a great time for publishers to put a face to your name.

Here’s what you really want to know.

Who is eligible to participate? Anyone who doesn’t work for a judging company.

Where is the form? I want to participate: http://www.saltcon.com/html/compete.html

How much does it cost? $10.00 to have each abstract reviewed. Yes, you can submit more than one game summary, but only one can go into the finals.

When is the abstract due? November 30th by midnight (U.S. Mountain time)

When is SaltCON 2011? You will present your game on Friday, February 18th.

What do I win? A plaque (screech). I know what you’re thinking. A plaque. Who wants a plaque?
We are assembling a team of professional judges. We can only commit a plaque to you (a very nice one though). The judges can ask you for your game after the competition for further evaluation and offer you a contract. That’s their business. We can’t offer you a better deal than giving you the opportunity to have your game looked at by companies like Fred Distribution, Mayday Games, Out of the Box, Sanity Studios, and Sunriver Games to name a few. Also, you can subsequently submit your games to companies and tell them that it was an ION Award Finalist/Winner.

The website has all the information and I will post more information here as it becomes available.

We look forward to seeing everyone from the past conventions and starting a great new tradition in gaming in Utah!

I'd vote for a Puerto Rico Tournament.

So before everyone spends their shiny microbadge coupons, I thought I would submit a microbadge for the SaltCon. Seemed like the hand drawn 6 sided die was the best thing to fit on a 16x16 square, so here's a sample. Any thoughts before I submit it to moderation?

Mouseover text: SaltCon Attendee

Also, do you mind if I design the SaltCon microbadge, now that I've already made a crack at it?

Once I submit to moderation, it could take 3-4 weeks before it is approved, so now's the time to get it submitted, so it will hopefully be available before the Con.

More power to you. I don't see anything wrong with the idea. I've been trying to make a 16X16 for my ganme food fight, and that is not a lot of room to work with to make it identifyable of anything more than a smudge of colors. With this dice it does identify the front page iconology quite well.

Whatcha folks think?

P

The games that are longer tend to take players away for a long time, doig nothing but the competition for the whole day, missing out on some fun times with diversity. I think instead of Puerto Rico, a shorter time-framed game like vanilla Race for the Galaxy or Roll through the Ages would fit. Not sure how many people have copies of RftG, but I'm sure there are plenty.

My wife has mentioned (as others too) a few times (when she gets to the finals in a Power Grid tournament), that it "kills" her day, going through the 3 rounds it takes to finish the tournament.

Just off-hand, would Heavens of Olympus be out and available for a tournament? Just saying it is a really nice looking game, and it would encourage others to try it, and doesn't look too taxing on the brain, and has a set number of rounds, playing in less than 1.5 hours per game.

How about Trollhalla? that'd be fun too. I like placing everyone on even grounds, and a tournament of PR is not for beginners. Some have never played PR and others have it down-pat, knowing each and every good move.

Just my thoughts, take em or leave em. Either way, I never do tournaments cuz they kill my game playing time, unless it is for a game I have not played before to which I don't mind it much, as long as everyone has not played it to death already.

Dan,

Looks good. I am checking what the others think. Thanks

Scott,

Phil is going to address the PR issue. I think we are open to whatever games we can do for the tournament and you are correct that PR would be a very long one.

Thanks

I enjoyed volunteering at the game library. It gave me a chance to look over the selection and didn't really even detract from game time, because I could play while managing the games. And you can't beat the discount pass!

Eh, why don't you put me down for Friday 10-2. I'm good for it.
