I cry at the end of "Paradise By The Dashboard Lights"?

When he starts praying to his god and on his mother's grave that he will love her till the end of time, I choke. By the time he's praying for the end of time to hurry up and arrive, I'm in full flood. Can't help it; I've tried to be sensible about it, it's just a song, just sing the damned words, but no... cry

Wow... and you're suggesting these aren't tears from laughter? Because I think that's what the song is going for.

Morgan, please specify why you can't make it to the end. Is it because you're
a) crying
b) laughing
c) don't give a damn

Think carefully; I may not be talking to you either.

I'm really hit or miss on "rockin'" musical theater. Meatloaf is firmly in the miss side (although I do like him in Rocky Horror) whereas I totally love Paul Williams (go figure). I tried to listen to that song again after reading your original post, but I just couldn't make it to the part you were talking about. Sorry.

Holy crap. The last two parts were part of my dad's repertoire he'd sing to me when I was a kid, along with songs such as "Puff the Magic Dragon," and "Cats in the Cradle." Of course, I was too young to understand that it was about a guy trying to score. I thought it was about a guy trying to sleep, but he was prevented from doing so by the woman until he pledged his undying devotion to her. This terrified me. I'd never heard this song again until now, and I had no idea it was by Meatloaf. That just makes the whole thing hilarious in retrospect.

So I guess at a point, you had a kindred spirit in that regard, though he was probably six.

God I feel young.

I understand, Morgan. No problem. You just have more "refined" tastes. whistle kiss

Paradise is one of the funniest songs ever recorded. Meatloaf is a genius. I just have to say 'prayin for the end of time' at our gaming table and we fall apart laughing for 5 minutes...

There are a lot of one-hit wonders, but Meatloaf was a one-album wonder. Bat Out of Hell was pretty solid - mostly because of Nielsen (IIRC). Too bad he didn't do much after that (Meatloaf, I mean).

How many one-album wonders can you think of? Stone Roses? Christopher Cross?

This thread has shown me that if women are from Venus, men are from the Dog Star! Have NONE of you grasped the hell that a few minutes of "paradise" have cost this guy?

Ah, never mind. You all are hopeless.

Mary, he doesn't HAVE to keep his promise, at the end doesn't he say:

I'll break my promise and forget my vow
It's over, it's over but for right now,
I'm praying for the end of time...

'course, maybe I'm wrong, TomA is always giving me grief for messing up lyrics..

No, Jess, it's much sadder than that.

I couldn't take it any longer
Lord I was crazed
And when the feeling came upon me
Like a tidal wave
I started swearing to my god and on my mother's grave
That I would love you to the end of time
I swore that I would love you to the end of time!
So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
'Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I don't think that I can really survive
I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now

I'm praying for the end of time
It's all that I can do
Praying for the end of time,
So I can end my time with you!!

I understand entirely what you're seeing and it is tragic, but that tragedy is outweighed by the comedy that he chooses to stay with this shrew and pray for the end of time to hurry up and arrive rather than leaving her.

But 1) he made a promise to her, and 2) he may be a devout Catholic in which case he made a promise before God and can't leave her. Whatever the case may be, he'd rather the world end than spend another minute with her, this woman who seemed so wonderful when he was 17.

Maybe that's what empathy is, reading between the lines. cool

This is why most civilized nations do not negotiate with terrorists.

Once you start giving in to unreasonable demands... you end up praying for the end of time; and if the people with their hands on 'The Button' do that, it's goodbye, Toledo!

Me, too. But sometimes that's not something I can control. So for the humourous part of our post I present an old joke, the only one I can think of this early in the morning.

Yesterday I met a man with a wooden leg named Smith.

I don't know what the name of the other leg was.

Exactly right. But this terrorist was holding captive something more dear than just a life.... sex! laugh

Edit: Oh, and what's with picking on Toledo? Is that a bit like always firing at Will?
