Ed Beach posted a link at the end of this geeklist but I thought this news deserved its own thread for visibility.

Charles S. Roberts has died.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/obituaries/bs-md-ob-charles...

I never played a game Roberts designed, but we all owe him a big "thanks" for his role in founding Avalon Hill and the modern wargaming hobby.

RIP.

Thank you on bringing this to our attentions, and I too owe a debt of many thanks and devotion from his not-so-humble-nor-discounted beginnings for these.

He was a gaming pioneer. His innovations launched the wargaming hobby as we've come to know it today.

My father bought one of the Avalon Hill wargames back in the mid 1960s. Probably a Charles Roberts game (not sure which one). I remember being fascinated by it even though I was too young to play. The hexes appealed to me. The cardboard counters became for me a sign of a sophisticated adult intellectual game. As opposed to the childish plastic pieces that were in my childhood games. Even now plastic or wooden playing pieces in a game do not excite me any more than cardboard counters.

I don't know what ever happened to that game. I wish it was still around. It is sad to hear of the passing of someone whose name I have heard of, over and over again for decades. All grognards know of him, yet no one else does. I guess we are part of some type of family that has just lost its patriarch.

What can I say. He and Donald Featherstone are equally responsible for me enjoying a lifetime of wargaming. My first board wargame was Gettysburg and being Scottish, I still have it. May God grant him eternal rest... and I'm sure a well stocked heavenly games library.

Pretty terribly written article there. That being said, I too have to thank Mr. Roberts for his contributions to my gaming life.

It is sad to see him go. The basic ground work he laid for the hobby and business is remarkable. He invented the modern combat results table for a commercial product (not counting Rand Corp which had invented one and internally used it) He founded Avalon Hill and then went on to his train interests.

A life well lived.

Thank you.

RIP

Thanks for the games Charles. A 4-1 CRT salute is due to you for birthing the hobby that so many of us enjoy.

His Gettysburg will be next up on my table as a memorial.

Sad news. I had the pleasure of meeting Charles on several occasions. A very nice man who was a bit amazed about what his early efforts had led to and how he was revered. I will have to get Gettysburg on the table.

He had a good run. I'm grateful to him for the enjoyment he brought to my life, and hopefully in the grand scheme of things, there will not be too many repercussions for having done it on the backs of the misery his games sought to portray, no matter how scholarly or intellectual that portrayal was.

I still have my battered copy of Tactics II among my prized possessions.

Agreed. The man was truly the father of our hobby.

I actually own an unpunched copy of Gettysburg. I will never play it but it was such an important game historically for our hobby that it will always be in my collection.

Maybe someone could name a wargaming award after him.
