My son's 9th b-day is coming up and i always like get a game. I'm drawing a blank this time. So help me out:

I'm looking for a short game, approx: 30 minutes,
A strong theme is nice, but please: nothing too violent or gory,
He's a little timid, so any strong Horror themes would be out,
He loves sports

Here are games we own or have tried and how he's responded:
LIKES:
He LOVES Formula De Mini (definitely his favorite right now)
Carcassonne
Ricochet Robot
Transamerica

Doesn't like:
Settlers of Catan
Ghoulash (HATED!)
Flinke Plinke
Bohnanza
LoTR: the Confrontation

Any suggestions would be welcome!

Some are born to move the world To live their fantasies But most of us just dream about The things we'd like to be Sadder still to watch it die Than never to have known it For you, the blind who once could see The bell tolls for thee...

Maybe some obvious suggestions (since he likes sports):

Battleball (unless you consider that too violent)
Streetsoccer

It's a tough one to get ahold of, but he would probably like Um Reifenbreite.

Maybe Heave Ho or Royal Turf would work too.

Excellent avatar, by the way!

My 7 and 11 year old boys (well, and my 3-year-old, come to think of it) all enjoy X-Bugs. It's not too expensive, and it has the added benefit that kids can beat adults, especially if the kids play more and practice up. My one piece of advice if you get this game is to go buy a yard or so of felt. It's a great playing surface.

Heroscape is another one my boys like.

My son's current favorites (he is also 9):

Heroscape
Memoir '44
Star Wars: Queen's Gambit
Star Wars: Epic Duels
Ticket to Ride
And he really likes the looks of Doom: The boardgame

I second these suggestions. Both are good, fun games with great sports themes. (My son is terrified of "bad guys" but still enjoys battleball.)

Thanks! these are all good suggestions. This has steered me towards some games I haven't considered before.

I've never looked into x-bugs before, that looks very interesting. So, am I right that you'd need two sets to play 4 players?

I've never looked at Street Soccer either, I definitely think he'd like that one.

We have Heave Ho and he does like that one.

We have Transamerica, so I've been reluctant to look into Ticket to Ride because I thought it was too similar.

I've seen Battleball on sale for 9.95 at our local KB toys. That price may make this one the winner. laugh

ps: thanks for noticing my avatar! it took me long time to earn it, so I'm pretty psyched to have one!

Well, if you want each player to have their own army, yes, you'd need two sets. Before we got our second set, we played with 2 people on a team, each team playing one army. It's good either way.

To all my geekfriends, I know I haven't been around much lately, but BGG is still my homepage and everyone is still in my heart everyday. Just so damn busy!

I agree..
you can't beat that price for Battleball. We also picked it up at KB for cheap, yet to be played though.

My son is 10 and likes Metro, Alhambra, Dragonland, Emerald, Royal Turf and Blokus to name a few.

How about Heroscape?
