A while back there was a discussion on CSW about bunching tactics and the need for a rule that would encourage fleets to spread out more realistically. Mark Barker has come through for us and written what Mike and I feel is a simple, elegant rule that addresses this. Please try out this rule in your next game and let us know how it works for you. This is not yet an official rule. I'd like to get some feedback before we put it in the living rules.

Masked Broadsides

If at any point during its activation, an active ship occupies the hex marked "port" or "starboard" in the Facing diagram (3.6.1) of a friendly ship, or if a friendly ship occupies the "port" or "starboard" hex of the active ship at any point during its movement, the facing broadsides of both the active and friendly ships are immediately marked as "fired."

In a nutshell, if two friendly ships find themselves adjacent at any point during a move, their broadsides that face each other can't be fired the rest of that turn.
