This is a customized Bane Tower from the game Man o' War
We play with a variant to provide the chance of a more approriate reward for the player who takes on tougher natives.
Place all the resource tokens in a cup or opaque bag at the start of a game.
After you win a battle against a group of 7 or fewer native pieces (including cavalry and cannons), draw one resource token as your reward. If you win against 8-10 native pieces, draw two tokens, keep one, and return the other to the cup. If you win against 11+ native pieces, draw three, keep one, and return the others to the cup.
Fighing a massive, powerful enemy and having the same rewards as someone who fought against a smaller enemy felt like both poor game design and also didn't make sense from a "civilization" standpoint. Your risk should be commensurate with your reward - especially if you stood a fair chance to get weakened significantly relative to your human opponents.
