Gotta buy a regular geekbadge before you can upgrade to an uber.

I think you need to buy a geekbadge first, then (for 50 more GG) you can upgrade it to an Uberbadge.

They are correct
You have to buy the standard one first.

By the way, I am brand-new to the site, and am looking for a FAQ page or some place to get an idea of whats going on.

For instance, How do you earn Geek Gold?

Getting Gold
The easiest way to get GeekGold is to submit things. Reviews will usually give you 3, an image gives you 1, other things pay other amounts. Some people list bounties on GeekGold for things like "Provide a translation for this particular German game," and so forth. You can see the list of things over there on the menu bar to the left under "Find Gold." Or you can get GeekGold by winning a contest or just simply begging.

It's kind of a reward system for participating, which I think is sort of fun. That said, some people take it way too seriously. It's just GeekGold, not RealGold.
