The answer depends entirely on which game, or which type of games, you would like to play.

- http://www.ludagora.net/ (Through the Desert, Medina, Hare and Tortoise, Set, Crazy Circus, Vinci and Capharnaüm). I've only played Through the Desert and it's ok. Enough players to find an opponent.

- http://www.spielbyweb.com/ (Wallenstein and Bus). I'm now on my first game of Wallenstein so this site is new to me.

- http://cartagena-online.de/ (Cartagena). Played a couple of games there before the server crashed. They're online again, but I'm not sure how the site is running now. From what I know, it's a good interface and there are enough players.

- http://www.cycloopspellen.nl/ (Transamerica and Clans). Good interface and enough players. I currently have some games going there.

www.boiteajeux.net

Beautiful, lots of players, very active and even though it is in French, not hard to use...

The games there: Alhambra, DVONN, GIPF, Drôles de Zèbres, Shazamm, Wooly Bully and Tyrus

Gamerz definitely (seconding Stephen Tavener)
Home page:

http://www.gamerz.net/pbmserv/

starting point

http://www.gamerz.net/pbmserv/tutorial.html

Commands

http://www.gamerz.net/pbmserv/commands.html

Games range from the abstract (many many chess, backgammon variants, the entire Project GIPF, go, shogi...about 100 in total and growing constantly) to the more sociables (Hearts, Blackout, Wizard...) to the utterly whimsical (Werewolf).

There is an associated mailing list for challenges and a very friendly environment that welcomes newcomers.

The latest game added to the server, by the way, is Hive.

Hope to see you there!

Lyman (gamerz userid: lyman)
