...just not for me!
I played my second game of MoE. And I still like it a lot! Here is a breakdown of my game (all nine turns). The "AI" was unforgiving. In this session, I'm playing the 'red' candidate.
WEEK 1 - PLANNING
I open with one itinerary cube (IC) on media presence for the 0 modifier and two ICs on fund raising to get the D+3 money roll. In addition, I opt to campaign in PA and MI with two IC and send my running mate over to WA.
WEEK 1 - RESULTS
I get $7 from fund-raising (not bad). My VP does nothing (as usual) and I gain two points in PA. Things are looking good - until I GAFFE (double 4's) in MI and the state slides safely into blue. My 'opponent' gains in IN and VA (which sends the Commonwealth safely into blue).
WEEK 2 - PLANNING
Reeling from my hit in MI, I decide to MEDIA BLITZ (political capital) in week 2. I'm going to shore up the Pacific voting bloc and grab some small state cubes in the process (CO and OR). I place one IC in fund raising and one IC in media presence.
WEEK 2 - RESULTS
VP is worthless again in MI; I gain two points in CO and nothing in OR. My media blitz works - I gain 3 points in all states in the Pacific. This slides CO safely into red. However, disaster strikes: my opponent hits MI (they must really hate us in MI), which is now safely in blue and they campaign in FL and take the Citrus State into blue.
WEEK 3 - PLANNING
I decide to call in some endorsements and push up MI, WI and NJ by one point each. I add my requisite media and fund raising one IC each, and send VP back up to Flint, MI to stump. Meanwhile, I decide to campaign in NJ, WV, and FL.
WEEK 3 - RESULTS
My running mate is literally run out of Michigan. No Cherry Pie for him! I get marginal gains (+1) in NJ and WV. FL produces a nice +2 in the polls. Strangely, my opponent decides to campaign in Helena, MT and grabs some cheap points which drives the Treasure State into blue. Also, he hits FL again, pushing FL into blue. Since he's also running advertising this week, it was decided to pile on in the Southeast - FL, NC and WV all move two slots into blue.
WEEK 4 - PLANNING
Things are starting to look grim. We are losing the Rust Belt and are taking a beating in the Southeast. I decide to give my DEFINING SPEECH, and hope that the message is understood. Again, fund-raising and spending time in front of the cameras, I decide to throw it all into a FL and MI push. Oh, I also send the VP up to Saginaw, MI to talk about industrial and job creation.
WEEK 4 - RESULTS
A breakthrough! The VP actually resonates with voters in The Wolverine State and polls show a marginal (1 point) gain. FL moves two spots up for our campaign. Things are improving. And then I step off the bus in East Lansing, give a hearty cheer for the Wolverines (GAFFE) and immediately lose 2 points in MI. Meanwhile, my opponent holds a series of rallies in Cleveland and the Twin Cities (OH, MN) and scores major points in both states.
WEEK 5 - PLANNING
I pull all the cash from our internet fund raising efforts and decide to make a broad push in NJ, FL and IA (small state grab). I also spend the money on advertising in the Midwest. The VP has been assigned to MI to undo my damage up there.
WEEK 5 - RESULTS
The VP helps, pushing MI up 1 point. NJ moves in the polls favorably, 1 point. Then I GAFFE in FL, gain nothing in IA and GAFFE the advertising in the Midwest. At this point, I decide the election is lost. My opponent slams the door on MI, PA and NV.
WEEK 6 - PLANNING
Licking my wounds, I decide to lay low for a week, raise money and do some advertising in the Rust Belt. I also make an appearance in Orlando while the VP visits Frankenmuth, MI, hoping to salvage whatever is left of our credibility up there. I start to call into question some of the facts my opponent brings up - perhaps that will slow him down?
WEEK 6 - RESULTS
No gains in FL, no gains in MI; however, we did get a 1 point bump from some advertising in the Rust Belt. However, my opponent gets a better push from advertising there, killing off our chances in the that area for good. In addition, he slams the door shut in MI and NJ.
WEEK 7 - PLANNING
Back out on the trail, the VP flies into Des Moines. My first stop of the week is Harrisburg, PA followed by a trip down to FL. I also make some social calls on donors. Mainly to thank them and assure them that "I'm fighing to the end!" Not doing any time in front of cameras. The major media outlets are smelling blood in the water.
WEEK 7 - RESULTS
The VP comes through in IA, gaining a point. I manage to gain 2 point in both PA and FL. The donors are happy and contribute a boat-load of money. It's too little, way too late; however. My opponent hits me in FL, NC, and twice in PA to really take the wind out of my sails.
WEEK 8 - PLANNING
I send the VP to FL to help shore up our bloc in South Florida. I need quick cash, so I spend two days fund-raising. Then, off to Old Dominion for some stumping. I also spend some money advertising in the Atlantic and Southeast.
WEEK 8 - RESULTS
FL is unresponsive to the VP and people are just not coming out to the rallies; however, when I arrive late in the week - the polls up tick for me by a point. Virginia is gets me nothing. They hit us across the board: NJ, WV, OR, WI.
WEEK 9 - PLANNING
The only thing I can hope for is a game changer from my small state visits. Right now, I've visited 4 and in this week, I'm going to visit NH, NV and MT to grab some small state cubes. Meanwhile, I'm also going to see what I can stir up in FL with the VP.
WEEK 9 - RESULTS
I gain 1 point in NH and MT, nothing in NV and basically 4 points (between the VP and myself) in FL. My opponent hits me everywhere: IN, IA twice and FL. In addition, he advertises in the Pacific and that disrupts my bloc there.
In the end, I'm able to use 7 small state cubes. The Rust Belt and Midwest are locked into blue before anything is resolved. I campaign in FL, VA, MO, NC and MN.
Final tally: 307 to 226 electoral votes (I kept: NH, CO, MO, MN, NV, MT and FL) - that's 69 more than I started with.
An absolute beat down.
The dice were definitely out to get you. Good grief. Not too many ways out.
I think if you had VA and perhaps MO, you might have had a closer shot at it. Did you lose any states on the final tally that you were leading in?
Yes, I actually lost OR during the final tally (I was leading with one space RED and rolled a 3 or a 4 which pushed it over even into one space blue.) So, the dice were really against me.
In one sequence (the second GAFFE, I think week 3 or 4) - I rolled 1 for the VP, 1 for my campaign stop, and double 1's for the advertising. I mean - the odds are incredible for that to happen. I obviously changed dice immediately (because the dice are faulty, of course!)
EDIT: the sequence to which I refer was in Week 5. I GAFFED my campaign roll in Florida (2 dice, both 1's). I rolled a 1 for my campaign stop in Iowa and then rolled double 1's for my 2 dice advertising roll.
