I thought I'd just give my brief reflections on a recent game of Athens & Sparta using the new 1.1 rules of August 2010.
My initial experience with the game using earlier versions of the rules and the Deer Valley rewrite was such that I vowed never to waste my time on it again. Having broken that vow and tried 1.2 I can say, much to my surprise, that it is a lot of fun and leads to historical enough strategies, with Athens and Sparta feeling like two distinct powers with different strengths and weaknesses that reflect their historical circumstances.
If you're interested in the period I would recommend it, but make sure to BURN the original rules before you are tempted to open them, and get the v1.1 rules online.
Is 1.1 different than 1.2, or was 1.2 just a typo? Also, would you recommend not bothering with the Deer Valley rewrite? I have a very fuzzy memory now, but my impression of the Columbia rewrite (v.1.1?) when I read it was that it still didn't address the question of what exactly constituted a 'mountain' hex.
