I'm somewhat familiar with Thunderstone.
What is the trap mechanic you mentioned?
Well in this case it would be some sort of Trap (or Rift or whatever you want to call it) card or cards that you mix into the main draw deck. These cards when they are flipped up on to the center row they are activated immedietely. Then they would read something like...
All players must either have 1 Lifebound Construct or a Lifebound card in hand to avoid the Rift. If not then that player must banish the top card of their draw deck. If the rift is avoided draw a card.
All players that have only one Mecha Construct active must discard all other non Mecha Constructs. If a player has 2 or more Mecha constructs draw a card.
Stuff like that...it keeps players on their toes and makes things a bit more interesting.
