Once upon a midnight clear, a lady wandered online far and near.
Searching for that perfect gift she could concoct quick and swift.
Christmas was approaching fast, the presents were wrapped, the tree was trimmed.
Yet the stockings did not bulge enough, they didn’t yet overflow with stuff.
One more thing to fill their frame, needed was a paper game.
A game to bring Christmas Cheer, and delight for all the year.

Your design challenge:

A Christmas Game for 2 or more .
There must be green, there must be red.
It must in a stocking fit!
A container of some kind must hold it, box or tube, is yours to choose.
Rules should be a tiny book, pocketmod or slim cards will do (the font must be legible!).
Fanciful is our theme, to delight and charm our aim.
Christmas should be celebrated, add a touch well-calibrated.
Generations on will joyfully revel in your clever, heartfelt gift.

From first October to first November may you toil, then we cut and paste and test.
One fortnight shall pass (ending November 15th) and the winner will be designated by public poll.

For prizes we have garnered such (and now the rhyming stops, whew!):

When you say fanciful is the theme, does that mean fantasy or does that mean anything mythical like say Santa Claus?

Fanciful in this context does not have to do with fantasy or myth, but "showing invention or whimsy in design; imaginative." (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/fanciful though, I *could* be wrong...)

I may partake of this challenge, we'll have to see how real life kicks me in the head first. :)

What Curt said. Although if you want to play with a fantasy game, by all means go for it. The more fun you have designing this, the more fun this will be for the rest of us!

Matthew, yes please.

Thank you Nick, Zejety & Kai! 1st prize is now 75.05

After a few minutes thought, D'OH YES. Be it Zombie Reindeer, Ghost Santa Claus, or more traditional fare. I'll go stick that in the Nitty Gritty.

Thank you for implanting an idea in my head, good sir.

As for the contest, are teams required for this or is it ok to make it a solo effort (Design wise, I realize the game must be for 2+).

Re: Christmas Print and Play Game Design Contest - And we're off!
Can the game have a solo variant? When dealing with red & green, can that be text or must the game components have red & green? If you have a box of animal crackers, does that mean the partial ones were eaten by the lions and crumbs inside are poop? (I'm a few days off from National Ask a Stupid Question Day...sorry)

If you want to include a solo variant, that's lovely. The base game must be for 2+.

As long as you have red & green in there somewhere, that fills the requirement. I'm trying not to fence people's creativity in too much, so I don't want to get down to pixel requirements.

Well, it wasn't explicitly stated, so I'll ask;

How is the winning entry to be selected?

Ahhhh! It is sort of a trick.

Quote:
Stocking size is subjective

That means that you get to decide this. Because stockings are different in different houses. I think you would want something smallish, so it would fit in a stocking. But if you decide your stockings are Huge, then so be it. Remember you have to make a box or holder of some kind for it, so that probably creates a limit of sorts.

We're going to Vote on it! With a Poll!
It might be something like "which game would you like to find in YOUR stocking?"
We have a Celebrity Judge who will be awarding a prize based on whichever game she likes best.

Re: Christmas Print and Play Game Design Contest - And we're off!
Ok .. seeing a high amount of in the pot, I'm happily inviting any designer or illustrator to do the artwork for my game ..

Your task would be:
redesign the 6 cards up there
design a backside for those cards
create a snowy backdrop for the playing field
create some stand-ups representing the opposing fractions
create some nice graphics for the rulebook

not much, actually
(I'll explain the details via geekmail)

What would be in there for you?
Well .. in case we win, you would get whatever is in the -pot by the time the winners are announced.

In case of 2nd place, I'm sure we can find a solution

(to be honest: right now the 2nd place looks more attractive to me, than the 1st place does )

Re: Christmas Print and Play Game Design Contest - 1st prize now at 200.41 GG!
What a great contest idea! I have my game in the works.

Title: The List
Ages: 4-12
Time: Probably around 15-20 minutes
Premise: Santa has decided it is up to the elves to create His List this year. As such, you the elves want to make the list as favorable to your favorite bunch of humans as possible. Add favorable traits to the "Good" side and ones unfavorable to your fellow elves to the "Bad" side. Swap your little ones intentionally or have them swapped due to events. In the end, the elf with the group of humans with the most "Good" points wins!

Should get some play testing with the kids this weekend!

Re: Christmas Print and Play Game Design Contest - 1st prize now at 200.41 GG!
I had an idea for something on my way to my local game group this morning. I don't really have a whole lot of time at the moment, though. The only way I think I can manage it is if I can use some resources (illustrations mainly) from the last one I did. Would this...

Speaking with no authority whatsoever, I highly doubt it if you're just recycling art. Look at FFG and their line of games set in Terrinoth (Runebound, Descent, Runewars and I think DungeonQuest now too), even in the business world it seems perfectly acceptable to recycle art so long as it makes sense and the game itself is different.

Just thought I'd be up-front with the competition rules and all.
I initially meant to make a series of these -- one each year. Got waylaid the second year in. Nice to have a kick in the pants to get me going

If you haven't published the game before, then it is eligible. Glad you are playing!
