Because the subject of this post is over 9,000 words long, I'm only including a link to its Web location (PDF or HTM).

This is a game glossary, but unusual in two respects: it includes both tabletop games and video games, and it is a glossary for game designers, not for game players. It has been written for inclusion in a book about game design.

What I am looking for from Geekdom is suggestions for entries that should be there but aren't, ones that are there but shouldn't be, and ways that the existing entries might be improved.

Links:
PDF: http://pulsiphergames.com/glossaryforgamedesigners.pdf
HTML: http://pulsiphergames.com/glossaryforgamedesigners.htm

Sorry about that, I'd have sworn I tested those URLs. No, the WWW is rarely needed any more, it was the .COM missing.

Appears to me that the problem is the ".com" is missing from both links.

I'm surprised you don;t have more responses to this. Great idea. Bookmarked.

Any chance of adding in an acronym subsection or posting this on a WIKI so everyone can update?

I think these could be interesting to add:

- Meeple
- Monster farming (using the monster respawn feature of a game to build up XP and/or loot by triggering the monster respawn event over and over)
- CDG (card-driven games)
- PBM/PBEM (play by mail/play by email)

In software design, "beta" usually refers to the final testing phase: the program is feature-complete, and all features are expected to work in all cases. Beta is to flush out the final bugs. "Alpha" refers to the prior testing phase, when the program is feature complete but has known bugs and limitations. And development is the phase before alpha, when the program is simply incomplete.

I presume this would apply to video game development as well, although I've never done that kind of programming (at least, not professionally) so they may have an argot I'm not familiar with.

For boardgame development I don't think the notion of "feature-complete" is quite as applicable; but if we want to use parallel terminology, I'd judge that "beta" is the phase when the designer hopes the game is done yet knows that it needs more playtest and possibly minor "tuning" before it is ready for release. "Alpha" would be when the designer knows it isn't done, but is holding playtests to try out solutions to known problems.

Just my $0.02, of course. Great contribution, Lew -- thanks!

An acronym section could be useful. What acronyms would you add?

WIKI--not anytime before publication, I'm afraid.
