If you want updates on when new TGIF polls are posted, or want to look at the results of past polls go to The TGIF Poll Subscription Thread.

As is my annual tradition now, while the voting is open on this year's Golden Geek awards I like to look back to last year's nominees. This way some of us, who hadn't played them last year can now share our opinions.

Whew! That took awhile! I forgot how many categories they had last year and how many nominees in each of those categories. Well, if you still have it in you, any discussion is encouraged.

Ugh, too many to fill out; I ran out of steam after several categories. Many of the same games showing up in multiple categories makes for redundant clicking.

Also you left out Abstract games. (Or was there no such category last year?)

It's a bit sad (but not unexpected) to see the BGG majority didn't even play the children's game nominees - if you want creative games you need to look around there. It's a bit more surprising to see party games (especially games like Dixit!) have the same result while it was quite expected that wargames are also unknown for the majority.

Whew. I went through very quickly (I thought) because mostly I only had to choose if I had played it and was indifferent or hadn't played and wasn't interested. Still, by the time I submitted, five more people (including me) had responded.

This poll really, really needs an "Haven't Played and Indifferent" option. There are so many games I have no interest in or have never even heard of. I'm certainly not uninterested. And if I were to research them, I might want to find out more. But I am definitely not yet interested.

Likewise, there are plenty of games I would hate to play (Space Alert, War Games, BSG, etc) which also get put into the same column (not played, uninterested). But these two types of games (avoided vs. not excited about) are both in the same category here.

Sorry, I misunderstood the question (I didn't even realise these were last year's nominees blush ). No, there was no abstract category last year it seems: BoardGameGeek_Golden_Geek

This made it really a pain to vote last year. I found that 15 nominees per category was just ridiculous!

Sorry about the redundancy. I used a lot of copy-and-paste, and didn't think to take out duplicates. It is nice, though, to compare each nominee to its competitors.

Some things I noticed as I went through:

d10-1 - There were a number of games that actually appealed to me in last year's Gamers' Games list. This year it's loaded with stuff I'm not that excited about ever playing.

d10-2 - Both last year and this year, "Family Game" seems to be the category I relate to the most. Almost every game on that list I've either tried and enjoyed, or haven't played but want to.

d10-3 - Not surprisingly the only 2-player games I've played are ones that play with more than 2 players

d10-4 - I guess I don't attract many wargamers to my TGIF polls.

d10-5 - There are some really fun games on the Party Game list, and some games that really are not party games.

d10-6 - There are some really fun games on the Children's Game list, and some games that really are not children's games.

d10-7 - I'm surprised how many of the card games I've never heard of, or have no interest in playing.

d10-8 - Good artwork/presentation doesn't add enough to make me interested in a game.

d10-9 - I have ZERO interest in expansions, except for On the Brink.

d10-1d10-0 - I guess I attract even fewer print-and-play gamers than I do wargamers to my TGIF Polls.

d10-1d10-1 - Apparently I love innovation in games, because I have played and enjoyed more of those nominees than any other category (including Family Games.) Also I have interest in most of the games that I haven't played.

I got through most of the categories, but gave up on a few I don't care about.

Which is actually one of two problems, for me, with the BGG awards. There are so many categories - and the big award isn't sufficiently differentiated in the voting - that it all kind of runs together, just as it did with this poll.

(The other issue is having everyone eligible to nominate and vote in categories such as wargames, whcih leads to things such as Small World winning because it's known outside of the wargamers. I'm not much of a wargamer, but I'd be far more interested in knowing what wargamers think are the best wargames than in knowing that Small World is popular and is officially within the boundary of "wargame". It's the reason I prefer an individual or jury system to a populist one, though I do think the DSPs balance things nicely.)

I did take the time to look at them all, but there are a lot of titles to consider (just like voting, in fact).

I agree. There are plenty of games that I am indifferent to and might actually play if someone else bought them and brought them to the table. There are a very few that I will not play.

I would have liked to have the artwork/presentation category responses actually reflect the category. To put this another way, some of these games are good games, but I wasn't as impressed with the artwork and presentation as I was with the game. There were other nominees where the artwork and presentation were so good that they made the game even better.

blott wrote:

This just shows that the past year was not as stellar a year as the previous one was. At least, that's the case in our shared opinion...

blott wrote:

My biggest problem with the two-player category is that it has become almost a second category for wargames. I would really feel better if the nominees for wargames were not eligible for consideration here and vice versa.

d10-6 - There are some really fun games on the Children's Game list, and some games that really are not children's games.

Both of these points highlight the problems of not having solid category definitions. I can see the intent of keeping the categories fuzzy, but it can cause some real odd choices being available.

blott wrote:

I rather like getting them, but find they don't always add things I want to the game...

blott wrote:

Yeah, I want to make print and play games, but find that I just don't have the time to put them together...

I would also be interested to see an "I own it, but haven't had a chance to play it yet" option. That's a bit more sold on the idea of a game than being interested in the game...

I will agree that my most missed option was "haven't heard of it". I'd say about 30-35% of the games fell in to that category for me.

Also, unless I'd played it (which for all the games I'd played, meant "played it and liked it" except for one), the choice of "haven't played it but interested" seemed a little broad for me. I'm pretty much at least willing to give most any game a go. But there was a big difference between some game I've never heard of, of a type I know I'll only find OK - but I'd still count that as interested - and several expansions listed where I love the original, own the expansion, but haven't played it yet. But yes, I know, ya gotta limit choices somehow!

There were three games, I think, where I marked them as "played it and liked it", where I've actually only played previous versions of them (Formula De, Tales of the Arabian Knights, Cosmic Encounter), but I feel pretty confident of my answer.

Oh, and I guess I'm one of those minority wargamers!

I am sure there are some great print n play, but as I can't find enough time to play the games I love, i'm really unlikely to ever look there.

I just wish there were more evidence of innovation in the nominated games. Not that all of the nominees are bad - Dominion, Pandemic, and Space Alert are certainty innovative, to name three. But Snow Tails? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the game - but from the first time I played it, it felt like a typical racing game. A well done one, certainly, but I didn't think there was anything brilliantly innovative about it. Or Le Havre; again, I really enjoy the game, but it didn't feel like something that hadn't been done before.

I think Hanging Gardens, for instance, was much more innovative IMHO. Unfortunately, by there very nature innovative games aren't necessarily popular games (or even necessarily good games, particularly), so most of the games I'd point to never had a chance.

Especially for polls of last year's games, I think "Own" would be interesting, as it requires a level of commitment above "Like". I also tend to like, "Never heard of it." If I never heard of a game, I pretty much voted by category.

I've heard Space Alert being played--far too loud--and should I every be tempted to play it, I'll just get out my CD of 101 Excruciatingly Annoying Sounds instead. Dixit just looks like, "Pick a phrase to divide the possible cards equally."snore

But all in all, last year was pretty good. We got a much improved version of Vinci, Dominion, Endeavor (but I played Hansa Teutonica about the same time and far preferred it). Maybe missing was heavy-but-short games like Caylus.

Looking at the BGG ratings, I note Dominion is at 7 and Race for the Galaxy is at 12; Stone Age and Pandemic at 23, 24. I wonder if the membership of BGG has increased to the point we're not dominated by hard-core hobbyist gamers?
