OK, this new toy has popped up around here in NY. Its not that its freakin brilliant... or is it... I just am amazed by it.

Its the size of a tennis ball, with a few tiny buttons and a single line of text, and it sells for about $16.

If you're not familiar with 20 questions, its easy. I think of something and you ask me 20 questions about it to figure what it is. If you guess what I'm thinking, you win.

So I pick up the thing in a store, and it starts with the typical "Is it an animal, vegetable, mineral or other?" Then goes on with things like "do you use it in an office?", "Is it bendable", "Is it less than a pound?"

And the damn thing pegged my answer of "Comic Book".

Hmmm.

Lucky guess.

So I get my son to try. He can't read, but he answers all the questions I read to him - a totally different logic set, of course... "Does it roll" "Do you use it indoors"

Skateboard.

Right again...

Well, now, I've seen this type of thing done on computer, but this thing is the size of a tennis ball for under twenty bucks.

OK, the first question is always Animal, Veggie, Mineral or Other. After that, at least when we played, they're all Y/N.

Now, if my feeble math isn't way off, that means after one question, there are 4 possible states, and then 19 doublings (unless it pulls some other multiple choices I haven't seen). That's over TWO FREAKIN MILLION POSSIBLE ANSWERS.

HOW!?

How did they cram that much data and all of the available questions into the logic trees? And who the hell determined what 2 million items to enter into the database? And who then defined their characteristics???

Holy moly.

I mean, sure, I remember when an LED watch was $100, but this is bizarre...

That sounds pretty freakin' amazing. It would be interesting to test its repeatability. Perhaps it got "lucky" by guessing 2 out of 2?

A while back someone on the Geek posted a link the the coorisponding website. I challenged it and it failed on "Church" by guessing Cathedral... but I wouldn't consider a Church a Cathedral... a Cathedral might be a church but not the other way round...

Anyway incase you want to try the smarter (because it learns based on users input) and cheeper version check out http://www.20q.net/

Anyway have fun.

Yeah, it is pretty cool. I bought one after trying it out in the store. I couldn't believe it when it got "cruise missile." I was thinking about the painting above my fireplace and it correctly and specifically guessed "oil painting." On the flip side it had trouble with "football", and has not yet been able to get "baby." It's not so much that it is fun, but rather that it has a really big Wow! factor. I also love how it trash talks.

They've been out in the U.K. for around 6 months or so I guess. I always like to have a go on one whenever I'm in town.

I've managed to take it up to 25 questions, but it still knew the answer in the end.

YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE SMARTER THAN ME...

YOU ARE THINKING OF...

A KEY!!!

Yep right again.

I've had this thing in my store for about a year now (I've seen 100 or so "games") and it's pretty impressive. It used the data collected on www.20q.net and put it all in a little ball. The website is refrenced on the back. I'm not that suprised by the size, but rather the price, $15. The website uses precentages to guess what you're thinking of, I don't know what the ball uses. It asks 20 questions from a set of about 40 different questions, seemingly at random (it doesn't seem to be narrowing down a list) then guesses. If it's wrong, it asks five more questions and guesses again.

PS While I was typing this an older gentleman came in and asked for "a little egg thing that asks you questions and guesses what you're thinking".

The company I work for has the distribution rights for independent computer retailers in the UK, and cosnequently we have had them around the office for about a year. They're incredible little things - they can even guess individual dog breeds! Seriously - someone here was thinking of rottweiler, and it got it!

Also, we have tried thinking of certainm um...body parts - it's really funny because it knows what you are thinking but can't say it, so it says something amusingly apt instead - try it!

The actual toy version of this always asks 20 questions before it guesses, but you can sometimes see that it is on the right track really early with the questions it asks...
