So we had a question come up with this tonight. Haunt 37 is Checkmate where the heroes play a game of chess with Death. The heroes lose if there is no hero in the room with Death at the beginning of the monster turn.

The question that came up is that the Traitor had the Spirit Board omen. After the haunt is revealed if the Spirit Board is used the traitor can move any number of monsters 1 space closer to whoever used it. If you are the traitor though you don't have to move the monsters.

Technically, if you read the abilities of the Spirit Board and the rules of the haunt, the Traitor should be able to use that and move Death one space. Since the monster turn starts once the Traitor is done that would make us lose the game right there. We played it that Death ignored the call and stayed put in his chess game, since that seemed to make more sense. What we were wondering is if we should have played it as written letting the traitor win.

In a game like this the thematic option is the best one. I think you made a good call.

Do you need more card ideas for the D&D Adventure System games?

You played it correctly. Your traitor misread the instructions. It says "Death can't attack or be affected in any way other than by being beaten at chess" so that rules out moving Death (a monster) with the Spirit Board or Bell.

It also says "You can't enter the room with Death or affect the hero there in any way, such as using the Bell, the Revolver, or the Dynamite" so that rules out interfering with the heroes.
