I was reading some of the pet peeves threads on here and got wondering what the consensus would be of the worst things players can do on game night.

At the risk of provoking a massively negative thread I thought we might be able to produce a list of the things that really people should not do. At the same time maybe we can remove some myths of what the perceived problems are.

I've put together this list after a run through of several pet peeves/bad behaviour/game types threads and geeklists. At 52 items it is much longer than I expected!

So I'm going to ask you to:
1. Rate them all on how bad they really are
2. Rate them on how often you have experienced them
3. Pick the ones that really bug you

Then I'll publish the analysis of the worst ones, the likely ones and the highest impact ones (worst & most likely combined).

If you think of anything that isn't covered then feel free to comment. I'll add the serious ones and laugh at the funny ones!

Poll
How bad are each of the following? (5=appalling, 0=acceptable)
  5 4 3 2 1 0
Arriving late with no warning
Asking to re-start the game because they are losing

(Doh!)

Turtling c/o wikipedia
In video games the term turtle has different meanings depending on the genre, but all relate to a completely defensive strategy of Attrition warfare. The basic element is avoiding damage while still harassing the enemy. The ultimate goal is usually to avoid defeat, by either delaying the enemy until an assault or counter-attack can be mounted; until more powerful forms of attack, or super weapons can be made available; or used in desperation to delay an inevitable loss in the hopes of recovering or to simply avoid the embarrassment of defeat.

Analysis of these polls:

Hmm...answering all that, we don't come out as the world's most socially advanced group of players.

I don't know about 'dogs in the game room'. In the pub where we play it's more often 'games in the dog room'. I feel a geeklist coming on...

Cool poll. I had to look up the word 'vindictive' - thought that had something to do with Master Mace Vindu

But IMHO cats are much more dangerous than dogs.
Once I played Cry Havoc at a friend's house, when the cat suddenly got a seizure (or however pet doctors call that uncontrolled behavior) and jumped into the gamebox. Now, if you know that game, you also know that all the counters are sorted in pairs ... and I also had the Outremer and Siege counters in that box.
I spent the next day sorting ... cry

The poll seems to assume the game night is taking place at someones home. The vast majority of my game playing is at a club. I might have different answers depending on venue. What is 'Iphone shit'?

Cats are certainly more disruptive to a game in progress, as they will jump on the table and walk across the board, or randomly attack the pieces in play. (Mine like to bat chess pieces across the room shortly after my move)

But a dog will try to EAT anything that drops to the floor, including cardboard counters.

That said, when we play at my oldest friend's place, the game table always has two large dogs under it, sleeping on everyone's feet. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Only a couple of them are specific to home gaming (e.g. dog, respecting host) most are generic.

Iphone shit - maybe iPhone shit - is messing about on your iPhone when you should be focussing on the game. Possibly distracting the other players with some great website/you tube video/app/etc. Possibly doing your email/online game/some other multi-tasking.

Yeah, no offense but your poll lost any credibility from me when you used a negetive word in reference to one of the things your asking people to judge about, which just sounds like your pissed off yourself at iPhones and classed all iPhone related things people do in games as "iPhone shit".

It's like saying "Hey do you want to play some fun Battlelore, or some Memior shit?" People will subconciously go towards Battlelore.

Why not just change it to "Stuff"?

I would have assumed adopting a completely defensive strategy. But I could be wrong.

Completely agree. I stopped doing the poll when I came across this one. True, you will find others who tolerate crude language and will continue to fill out your poll but I have better things to do.

I just find it remarkable that smoking is considered completely unacceptable by such a large majority.
If it's a smoking venue, then I don't see how anyone can have complaints.

There is this guy in a group I'm currently playing with that keeps pointing out or degrading other people's "bad" moves. I've tried to subtly point this out to him but he doesen't seem to take a hint.

Should I just tell him to shut the hell up or silently dedicate my play to anhialate him at the next game night?

It means playing a defensive strategy which makes it harder for the person who is complaining about turtling to attack the turtle.

I don't care about the "crudeness" of the word chosen, but like the others, I am mystified as to what "iPhone s**t" refers to. What is it???

Regarding the use of "excessive", I think by definition that rather implies the behavior is not acceptable, so I can't choose that answer. But, e.g., if you're truly explaining the rules, I wouldn't want anything left out, so then that must be acceptable. So I clearly can't choose any other choice. But you probably knew I would think that, so obviously, I...

Just sayin'

My friends and I all live in apartments and either don't smoke (and so don't allow smoking in their residence) or live in smoke free buildings. Ontario has been anti-smoking for years now (bars are not even allowed to provide any kind of roof for smokers and smoking under the awning of a building can net you a fine.)
