For the love of all that is holy, will someone just ask her about the book?

Got taught a lesson today. We decided to try the scenarios from the FFG website, starting with the Tide of Serpents thing where Yig is the big meany. How confident we were as we drew two Elder Signs in the random unique items. How smugly we smirked as we decided to use clue tokens rather than Elder Signs to seal gates in order to score more highly when our inevitable success was achieved. At one point one of the players was so over-confident that he considered losing an Elder Sign when he was beaten up rather than his precious Enchanted Blade, though he was finally dissuaded by the other investigators.

How anguished we became as we drew the Mystic Environment card which says that gates can’t be sealed, and it just sat there and sat there whilst the doom tokens on Yig crept up. Our whole strategy had to change.

We couldn't machine gun the cultists without the doom track going up, and they're very difficult to evade, so as they moved around blocking streets, monster surges pushed the terror track up. Investigators were sat outside gates with explored markers, having encounters in the locations waiting for the environment to change...and then finally, with Yig on 9 doom tokens, it did. A quick finish to the game, relief all round at not having to fight the GOO, but a lesson learned.

Sounds like a riotous good time!

One thing, tho... you don't normally have an encounter when on an open gate; it replaces the location... unless you house rule it, or perhaps meant "encountered monsters from surges, during movement".

Amazing how big a factor those wimpy cultists can become, in conjunction with some GOO powers...

Yes it was, thanks!

Ah, yes, we played that wrong then, but that's OK because if anything we made it harder for ourselves. We did have to fight or evade monsters from surges, as you suggested, though not on the first turn back, and Prof Walters even got sent to hospital when a surge kindly fed him a fight with Hounds of Tindalos. This does answer the question we faced about monsters and gates appearing from encounters on a location which already had an open gate though. Checking the rules we were quite happy that no gate or monster should appear, but now I see that the question should not have arisen in the first place.

Cheers!

We had a game like that just last week where we had four gates sealed at about the one hour mark or maybe even sooner, then rumors and the close, but not seal environment came out. So all of our clue tokens were taken by rumors and couldn't seal for quite some time. Ended up like a 3.5 hour game for four players.

My wife's character kicked butt though. She went against 5 nasty monsters on a rumor in a single turn and beat them all.
