Like most I was a bit put out to see the red fire pieces looking different than those in the rules...

Luckily about 30 minutes later I stumbled across a stall at Essen selling game pieces with what looked like the proper fire cone pieces for just 5c each :) Bargain... just 3 euros for 60 cones to replace those in the box.

Looks like they sell on-line so thought I'd share the link in case othes wanted to 'correct' their version of the game as well... no idea of postage costs though.

How large are the houses? Bigger than Catan houses? I notice they have those too.

Edit: the availability of these cones might make me rethink holding off getting a copy... perhaps I could bill JKLM/Prime Games for my trouble whistle

Please do not pester them until they have shipped all the preorders. We have waited long enough as it is.

To be honest I wouldn't be that concerned myself, the game is great with the cones as supplied... I just saw an opportunity to do this for cheap at the fair and thought I'd share it with everyone else.

Richard is doing a very good job of keeping his head below the parapet. Such a shame since it isn't his fault. In any case, I suspect he will feel obliged to tow the party line.

Are they functional is the main question? the advantage that I see with the cones is a solid base on a cone. If this is trimmed down and you are placing a 2nd piece on top of it, it seems like it would easily be knocked over and a mess everywhere.

The black 'extinguishers' fit fine over the top of these cones, as good as they fit over the pieces that came with the game... no idea if they're the same size as the 'intended' ones but they do the trick.

I bought 400 red cones for 4c each at the fair and have enough supply for a few games now.

LET'S PLAY!!!

Cheers,
Andreas

I meant are the "sticks" provided with the game functional as is? I am disappointed not to have the cones to begin with as that is what I thought I was purchasing when I asked for someone to bring this back for me. I am more disappointed that I have to buy spare pieces from across the pond. But if what comes with the game doesn't even work as well, then that is a serious problem.

The game is playable with the other pieces as well of course. It's just that they are easier to tip over because of the smaller base and the somewhat higher center of gravity. For people who enjoy the game - no problem.

The bullets supplied with the game actually look rather unstable. Certainly the cones we used at the UK Games Expo were far better looking and did not topple over.

Even on the BGG Essen videos you can see that a slight knock and the bullets topple. Not good.

BTW, How big is a Monopoly house compared to Catan house?

Edit: Another question: What is the height of the trained band cone?

Richard Denning's comments on the cones are here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/video/3657/the-great-fire-of-lo...-. Essentially, he says they fix a problem with the original cones being too big, and the change was not a cost saving exercise.

I have yet to see a comment from anyone who seems to agree. If I ever get the game I have paid for, I will give a point of view then.

Fantastic, yet tricky to put one of those black cones over, no?

To highlight your options a little more. BEDI have indeed sold out of the large red cones. Here's what you can do.

From the left:
* Red Settlers of Catan Traders
* original shipping bullets
* BEDI cones, now only available in brown.

The higher cones are a little nicer visually, but you'd need to strip the brown surface off and paint them in red, while the shorter trader cones are wide enough at the base that the bands don't go down too far.

Both options are available from BEDI now.
