USGS's 2002 Alaska survey figures of oil reserves revised downwards by about 90 percent.

Not that this will stop the usual suspects from screaming DRILL BABY DRILL, but hey.

And it won't stop the need for oil.

Keep in mind this is not referring to all of Alaska or ANWR. It specifically is talking about their estimation of undiscovered oil in the National Petroleum Reserve. It's a specific area that is only a fraction of the area in Alaska with oil reserves.

Drilling in ANWR won't stop the need for oil either. At MOST there are 7.7 billion barrels in the proposed drilling area, which, even if it could be extracted instantaneously, would not satisfy US consumption for more than a year.

Of course, it can't be extracted instantaneously, it would take at least a decade to hit the market, and at least 2 to hit peak production capacity. Even then, it would be less than 1% of the worlds oil.

The NPRA is also directly to the west of ANWR and another target of the "drill, baby, drill" crowd. These latest findings also raise serious questions about current ANWR estimates:

http://www.energydigital.com/tags/california-governor-arnold...
Quote:
The findings have sparked doubt of whether or not the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), a 19-million-acre piece of land located west of the NPRA, is as oil ripe as the USGS claims.

Also, according to the DOE, the estimates in ANWR are dependent on the oil production of geological formations in neighboring State lands (i.e. the NPRA):
http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/servicerpt/anwr/
Quote:
The USGS oil resource estimates are based largely on the oil productivity of geologic formations that exist in the neighboring State lands and which continue into ANWR. Consequently, there is considerable uncertainty regarding both the size and quality of the oil resources that exist in ANWR. Thus, the potential ultimate oil recovery and potential yearly production are highly uncertain

Not that this will get the usual suspects to start making arguments based on actual evidence or anything.
