Here is a semi-cooperative variant of the rules:

All Good players win together. Evil players must win alone.
To claim victory, the Good players must have no monsters in front of any of them and one of them must possess the Necronomicon.
When a Good player defeats a monster and draws victory cards, any monsters drawn must be put in play. The active player chooses where the monsters are played.
This variant brought a lot more monsters into play and reduces the likelihood of a very short game in the event that a player begins with the Necronomicon in hand. It also removes the awkwardness of supposedly Good players having such strong motivation to attack one another. (Which happens in the movie, sure, but not once the real fighting starts which is what the game is supposed to reflect.)

Another variation that would reduce the likelihood of a short game would be to say that any player beginning the game with the Necronomicon in hand is automatically Evil. The Evil victory conditions are much more difficult to achieve in the early game.

To stop the early win on the first turn which has happened to us just last weekend, we introduced the rule that at the start of the game instead of flipping and adding one monster to your pile that it is actually better if you just flip two onto your pile. It worked for us in making the game play out a bit longer. In one particular game - A LOT LONGER.
