"Halloween is becoming a forgotten holiday. We dedicated followers of the Great Pumpkin must do something to rekindle that holiday spirit. Let us not rest until the universe resounds with Pumpkin Carols!" -- Cartoonist Charles M. Schulz from his introduction to the 1969 Hallmark Cards Halloween combination songbook and greeting card entitled "The Peanuts Book of Pumpkin Carols"

In 1969, Hallmark Greeting Cards released a greeting-card booklet of Linus' Pumpkin Carols from Charles Schulz's "Peanuts" comic strip. However, by the time of its publication, Pumpkin Carols had already been in vogue for two or three years because they'd been first composed and performed by college glee club and college students at several universities in the late 1960s who'd been inspired by the perennial Peanuts animated Halloween TV special, "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!"

The Hallmark greeting-card songbook was my very first exposure to Pumpkin Carols (essentially Great Pumpkin-themed filksongs) and I've long regretted having lost that little greeting-card songbook because they were great fun to sing. Thanks to the Internet, however, Pumpkin Carolers have been able to share the originals which have long since become public domain and add other new ones to the canon.

Therefore, in order to help you all spruce up the sincerity of your own pumpkin patches in anticipation of the Great One, I present this collection of Pumpkin carols along with some newer ones of my own creation....

"On Halloween night, the Great Pumpkin rises from the most sincere pumpkin patch of all to fly through the air and bring toys to all the good little boys and girls in the world!" -- Linus Van Pelt, First Apostle of the Great Pumpkin

We Great Pumpkin Advocates Are
(sung to the tune of "We Three Kings of Orient Are")

We Great Pumpkin advocates are
singing tunes to friends near and far
of dark demons,
ghosts and goblins;
Great Pumpkin's our shining star!

Ohhhh -- ohhhhhhh__

Star of Horror, Star of Blight,
Star of mystic powers of might,
ever leading, we are pleading,
let this be Great Pumpkin's night!

The Great Pumpkin's Coming to Town
(Sung to the tune of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town")

Oh, you better not shriek;
You better not groan;
You better not howl;
You better not moan;
The Great Pumpkin's coming to town!

He's gonna find out
from folks that he meets
who deserves tricks
and who deserves treats;
The Great Pumpkin's coming to town!

He'll search in every pumpkin patch,
haunted houses far and near
to see if you've been spreading gloom
or bringing lots of cheer.

Oh, you better not shriek;
You better not groan;
You better not howl;
You better not moan;
The Great Pumpkin's coming to town!

Deck the Patch
(sung to the tune of "Deck The Halls")

Deck the patch with orange and black;
Fa-la-la-la-la_ la-la_ -la_ -la_ !
Take along your goodie sack;
Fa-la-la-la-la_ la-la_ -la_ -la_ !
Don we now our gay apparel;
Fa-la-la-la-la_ la-la_ -la_ -la_ !
Troll the ancient Pumpkin Carol;
Fa-la-la-la-la_ la-la_ -la_ -la_ !

See the Great One rise before us;
Fa-la-la-la-la_ la-la_ -la_ -la_ !
As we sing the pumpkin chorus;
Fa-la-la-la-la_ la-la_ -la_ -la_ !
Follow Him as lo, He ascend!
Fa-la-la-la-la_ la-la_ -la_ -la__ !
Join with true Great Pumpkin friends;
Fa-la-la-la-la_ la-la_ -la_ -la__ !

Fa-la-la-la-la__ la-la__-la_ -la____ !

O' Pumpkin Cards
(sung to the tune of "O' Christmas Tree")

O', Pumpkin Cards, o' Pumpkin Cards,
to my friends carry greetings;
Let them know the day is here
when Great Pumpkin will appear;
O', Pumpkin Cards, o', Pumpkin Cards,
to my friends carry gree-tings!

Pumpkin Wonderland
(sung to the tune of "Winter Wonderland")

Screech owls hoot, are you listenin'?
Beneath the moon, all is glistenin';
A real scary sight, we're happy tonight
waiting in a pumpkin wonderland

In the patch we're waiting for Great Pumpkin;
We've been waiting for this all year;
For we've tried to be nice to everybody
and to grow a patch that's most sincere.

Later on while we're eating
what we got trick-or-treating,
we'll share all our sacks
of Halloween snacks
waiting in a Pumpkin Wonderland!

I Heard the Bells On Halloween
(sung to the tune of "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day")

I heard the bells on Halloween,
their old familiar carols scream
and wild and sweet
the world repeat:
The Pumpkin Season's here again!

Then pealed the bells more loud and strong:
Great Pumpkin comes before too long!
The good will get;
The bad will fret;
The Pumpkin Season's here again!

I'm Dreaming of the Great Pumpkin
(sung to the tune of "I'm Dreaming Of A White Christmas")

I'm dreaming of the Great Pumpkin
just like I do this time each year
when he brings nice toys
to good girls and boys
who wait for him to appear.

I'm dreaming of the Great Pumpkin
with every pumpkin card I write;
May your Jack-o'-Lanterns burn bright
when the Great Pumpkin visits you tonight!

Pumpkin Bells
(sung to the tune of "Jingle Bells")

Dashing through the streets
in our costumes bright and gay,
to each house we go
laughing all the way!

Halloween is here
filled with lots of cheer;
What fun it is to trick-or-treat
singin' Pumpkin Carols each year!

Oh, Pumpkin Bells, Pumpkin Bells,
ringing loud and clear,
Oh, what fun Great Pumpkin brings
when Halloween is here!

Oh, Pumpkin Bells, Pumpkin Bells,
ringing loud and clear,
Oh, what fun Great Pumpkin brings
when Halloween is here!

Shivery Yells
(Sung to to the tune of "Silver Bells")

We're on sidewalks; we're on porches
dressed in costumes to scare.
through the city we're ringing the doorbells

Trick or treating, candy eating,
gooey stuff in our hair;
but the most fun is shrieking out loud

Shivery yells, shivery yells,
That's the Halloween nitty-gritty
Moan and groan; leaves us alone
Halloween's just one night a year.

Out In The Pumpkin Patch
(Sung to the tune of "Up On The Housetop")

Out in the pumpkin patch, believers pause.
Up soars the Great One; hear the applause!
Down through the rows with goodies and toys
All for his followers' Halloween joys!!

Haunt! Haunt! Haunt! Who wouldn't want?
Haunt! Haunt! Haunt! Who wouldn't want?
To be in the pumpkin patch: Cheer! Cheer! Cheer!
Waiting for the Great One and being sincere.

The Twelve Days of Halloween
(sung to the tune of "The Twelve Days of Christmas")

On the ( ___-nth) day of Halloween,
my True Love gave to me:

1. An owl in a rotten oak tree
2. Two trick-or-treaters
3. Three black cats
4. Four skeletons
5. Five scary spooks
6. Six goblins gobbling
7. Seven pumpkins glowing
8. Eight monsters shrieking
9. Nine ghosts a-booing
10. Ten ghouls a-groaning
11. Eleven masks a-leering
12. Twelve bats a-flying

"I Saw Lucy Kill The Great Pumpkin!"
Snoopy's Horrorful Halloween Eve Lament
(C) Copyright 2001 by James W. King (jameswking@aol.com); All Rights Reserved.
(Sung to the tune of the Christmas song, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus")

I_ saw Lucy kill the Great_ Pumpkin_
out in Linus' pumpkin patch last night_ ;
She didn't see me creep_
through the vines_ to have a peep_ ;
She thought that I was tucked up
on my doghouse fast_ asleep__ .

Then I_ saw Lucy gut the Great_ Pumpkin_ ,
disemboweling him with a butcher knife_ ;
Oh, what a fright it would have been_
if Linus had only seen_
Lucy kill the Great Pumpkin last_ night_ !

I_ saw Lucy kill the Great_ Pumpkin_
out in Linus' pumpkin patch last night__ ;
She didn't notice me_
as she cut his shell so deep_ ;
It was all that I could do_
not to *sincerely* raise a peep_ .

Then I_ saw Lucy stab the Great_ Pumpkin_
carving out some eyes 'n' mouth with her knife_
Oh, what a blight it's gonna be_
for Linus this Halloween_
'cause Lucy killed the Great Pumpkin_ last_ night___ !*

________________________________

*Yes, Snoopy was right: Lucy did "kill" the Great Pumpkin from Snoopy -- and Linus' -- point of view: She stole into Linus' pumpkin patch after dark, chose the biggest pumpkin of all and made a great big ole Jack O'Lantern of it! But, of course, Snoopy's imagination has been known to take him on all kinds of flights of fancy.

"Lucy Got Possessed By The Great Pumpkin"
You-Know-Who Strikes Back
(C) Copyright 2001 by James W. King (jameswk...@aol.com); All Rights Reserved.
(Sung to the tune of the Christmas novelty song "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" by Patsy & Elmo)

Lucy got possessed by the Great Pumpkin
barfing on a pumpkin Halloween;
Though she'd never put much stock in the Great One;
Lucy always gave Linus lots of grief.

She'd eaten way too much candy
much too late and much too rich;
So when her belly got to achin',
she became like her costume -- a crabby witch!

When we found her the next morning
out in Linus' pumpkin patch,
her eyes shone like a Jack O'Lantern's
with an eerie, leering Joker smile to match.

Now we're all proud of Linus;
He's been taking this so well;
See him there in his garden
with that scarecrow of a harlequin from Hell?

It's like Halloween without Lucy;
The goodies left in her sack
from Trick-or-Treats are such plunder:
Let us gobble up the rest and not look back!

Now that scarecrow guards the pumpkins
grinning like a crocodile;
How strange its snaggletooth visage
almost seems to match the teeth in Lucy's smile!

I warned all my friends and neighbors,
"Better boost your sincerity!
Best to accept Linus' notions,
lest the Great Pumpkin detect your hypocrisy!"

Lucy got possessed by the Great Pumpkin
barfing on a pumpkin Halloween;
Though she had eaten way too much candy,
Lucy got "squashed" for her lack of belief.

Lucy got possessed by the Great Pumpkin
barfing on a pumpkin Halloween;
You can say there's no such thing as the Great One;
But as for me and Linus, we believe.

________________________________________

-- Lucy got "squashed" for her lack of belief = Lucy got possessed by that Sainted Gourd because she had most of the time dissed Linus' beliefs in the Great Pumpkin. In a snide remark to Linus, Lucy had once referred to the Great One as "the Great Squash."

the pages of me-mories

like ghosties with no_ "Boo!"_
Halloween without you__ !

Halloween without_ you_ ,
Trick-or-treat's through, and I'm_ blue_ !
I love you_ , I miss you_ !
So sad_ but so true_ .

Halloween without_ you_ ,
like when Great Pumpkin's over-due_
for Sally's "Sweet Ba-boo"_ ;
Halloween without you__ !

Halloween without_ you_ ,
Trick-or-treat's through, and I'm_ blue_ !
I love you_ , I miss you_ !
So sad_ but so true_ .

like witches with no_ brew_ ;

Halloween_ with-out *you*___ !
