Hi there,

I have just been to Prague on a school-trip with Østerskov Efterskole. We found a few places of gaming-interest. (actually most of the city is of interest...)

Games in Prague are generally rather expensive (even compared to danish prices), but you could be lucky to find a gem.

1) Černý Rytíř - The Black Knight (http://www.cernyrytir.cz/).
Za Poříčskou branou 21, Praha 8
We thought it would be hard to find, but its just near the undergroundstation Florenc, and there is a sign at the street. Nice gamingshop with lots of MtG, lots of tabletop (mostly Games Workshop, but some Flames of War as well), some rpgs and a few boardgames.

2) Ogří Doupé - Orcs Nest (?).
Zitna 45, Praha 1
Few hundred meters from Underground´station Muzeum. Games Workshop mostly and a few boardgames, books (GW) and Flames of War.

3) Hras (http://www.hras.cz/)
Pasáz Rokoko, Praha 1
Easy to find, look for a huge sign saying ROKOKO on the left part of the Wenceslas Square (looking down). Huge range of boardgames and pussles.

4) Bookshops and toystores. Some of them have a few games, but we found nothing special.

/Jakob

Thanks Jakob. Armed with the address and map, went seeking this shop out. Not very big store, but filled with a pretty wide selection of Euros. Spotted some games which I thought were outta print like Los Mampfos and the Zoch edition of Villa Paletti and... *drumroll*... the 1999 edition of Acquire IN SHRINK!!! surprise But it was going for 3000 Czech Korunas!!! (~ US$176) so I gave it a miss.

As described by Jakob, the store is in this building called Hotel Rokoko (though when you enter at ground floor, it doesn't resemble a hotel in the least)at the side of Wenceslas Square (which, as a tourist, you're most likely to visit anyway, so very easy to pop in once you know it's there) - it's also in the same building as the statue of St Wenceslas riding the Upside Down Horse - http://www.redbubble.com/people/amb1946/art/1722532-prague-u...

Prices actually seem alright to me for a FLGS - I bought Hey, That's My Fish! Deluxe (Czech) Edition for 399 CzK (~US$24) which I thought was a pretty good price. And I bought Catan Junior for 495 CzK (~US$29) which I saw selling at the Czech toy store chain Sparkys http://www.sparkys.cz/ at 740 Czk (US$44)! Boy was I glad I took note to compare pricing before buying!

Sparkys is like ToysRUs, general toy store. They do have some Euros, but just the most popular/gateway titles like Settlers, Carcassonne, some Ravensburger stuff etc. perhaps total 20 titles or so. You could pop in to take a look if you pass by one, but, no point to really go looking for it - you'd be better off searching for the HRAS (this FLGS we're talking about above).

Hi, Hras is very well placed; specifically for foreign visitors; but it´s very expensive... Černý rytíř is much better, but it´s more on LCG/CCG/war miniatures etc. They have boardgames, but if you want euros, it´s not best choice (they have just few). On the other hand, they´re on the good place (metro B/C Florenc and just like five minutes from bus station; if you´re coming to Prague by bus from another country, you´ll most propably be getting off on this station). Good shops are also http://www.tomovyhry.cz/ (near shopping centre Anděl, which is shopping/restaurant area placed like 15 minutes by trams from locations like Charles Bridge/Prague Castle/mala Strana) or http://www.svet-deskovych-her.cz/ (also not so far from centre; this time from Wenceslas Square). Good place for games is also NeoLuxor on Wenceslas Square (almost opposite side from Hras), it is Prague biggest book store, but they have also wide selections of games; especially family ones or gateway ones, but quite a few euros also. Negative is, that most of them is translated to czech language; but it´s possible to find language independent games or with minimum text (most rules these days are online anyway). Also in most shopping centres are stores with games (or toys shops which in most cases have board games also), but nothing special.

I visited Tomovy hry while travelling in Prague
(the shop is located here: http://www.tomovyhry.cz/kontakt.html )

The personnel was a nice group of gamers, of which at least some knew English enough to talk about games at a detailed level. First I received a quick introduction to Czech games. If you can cope with games in Czech language, you could save some bucks.

Eventually I ended up buying Alien Frontiers (in English) since the price was reasonable, approx. 40 euros. All in all, it was a successful side journey during my visit in the nice city of Prague. Moreover, it is a quick walk from Palackého náměstí‎ tram stop. Recommended!

Yes, Tomovy Hry changed location of their shop, so now they are even more better located than they were. Near centre, in fact just under Vysehrad sightseeing area close to river.

I have a soft spot for Tomovy Hry as they had a new copy of the kiddie grail game Gulo Gulo available for sale last year. Actually, I remember I was given an extra 30% off too.
Nice shop

We are going to Prague with the school again this november.

I'll look up the shops and update the list here.

Any new suggestions?

I have been to http://www.svet-deskovych-her.cz/ and it is not a shop in the traditional sense. I think he deals primarily in online orders and you need to buzz to be let in. There is a big room with all the stacks of games, but it has a more residential than shop-like feel.

That being said, he does have very good selection of games.

svet-deskovych-her has a newer location

Žitomírská 642/30, Praha 10

not far from the old one. YOu don't have to be buzzed in anymore, it's a regular shop, there is a good selection and a ton of games which can also be tried on the spot in a large gaming area. They have some weekend and evening events too. They post their opening hours each week and the owner is very helpful.

My top three (in no particular order):

svet-deskovych-her.cz Prague 10
tomovyhry.cz Prague 2
svet-her.cz Prague 7

These are all really good stores.

www.cernyrytir.cz can also pretty good for some deals. They have board games even though they are more focussed on magic and Warhammer.

If you go to Brno, I'd recommend www.planetaher.cz

We just got back to our hotel from today's visit to Prague castle and Wenceslas square where we visited the Hras shop which is located in a small shopping gallery.
I would certainly recommend this shop. It has a nice collection of boardgames and a friendly shopkeeper. I saw a copy of Defenders of the Realm which was on my radar for quite Some time already. However it was not in shrink anymore but otherwise complete. When asking for the price the owner told me 1400 Ck. I thought that was a fair price so I gave it a go. My wife also bought Lords of Waterdeep en Carcassonne mini expansion 3: the ferries. When checking out the shopkeeper spontaneously gave me a 50% reduction on DotR!!! Me super happy. Definitely recommending this shop! meeple

There's also Mephit (http://mephit.cz/en/), which is located near Arbesovo Namesti. Their prices are sometimes higher but they have a good selection of games in English. As mentioned before, Cerny Rytir is a good choice and Tomovy Hry, which has the smallest selection of the three.

If you're at Andel on a weekday and looking for something to do for a few minutes you can also try Raj Deskovek (http://www.rajdeskovek.cz/) but they don't have a lot of games and they're ALL in Czech so keep that in mind.

If you're here for a few days you can always order online from Planeta Her (http://www.planetaher.cz/) and have it delivered (the store is located in Brno). You can also have a look at the Bazar on Zatrolene Hry (http://www.zatrolene-hry.cz/bazar/) where private sellers auction off used games and many times will meet you if they live in or near Prague.

Enjoy Prague... and the beer
