These are the new cards this season:

"We are the People!" This event allows the Democrat to move SPs from the Lutheran Church space to any other spaces in Germany. This represents the revolution moving out of the sanctuary of the churches into the general population. It also prevents the Communist from making Support Checks in Leipzig. This represents the march on October 9 when the security forces backed down and did not fire on the marchers.

Foreign Curency Debt Burden This event represents the economic crisis in Poland, Hungary and East Germany caused by borrowing from western banks and exports not generating enough hard currency to service the loans. This prevents any support checks in one country in Eastern Europe for the rest of the turn.

"Heal Our Bleeding Wound" This represents the final withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. Probably used for Ops the first time through by the Communist and used on the TS track by the Democrat. It's a card that can come back to bite the Communist pretty hard if dealt to the Democrat in the Late Year, as the Democrat will get 3 VPs for allowing the Communist event to happen and get 3 Ops.

Samizdat Samizdat were opposition newspapers or pamphlets that were published secretly and passed around among dissidents, often reproduced by hand. This event allows the Democrat to put a card aside a card for the next turn. A nice safety valve for a bad scoring card or Communist event.

New Year's Eve Party This is a new card that allows either player to end the game early. There is no final scoring. The opponent earns 6 VPs, but the player who plays the event gets to pick where a final Power Struggle will take place. To be used as the event it has to be played as the first Action Round of the turn, so the other player can prepare for the final Power Struggle. There is also some cat and mouse about where the final Power Struggle will be. Usually this event benefits the Communist, but the Democrat can use it if Romania looks very bad, and he is close to control in a country where the Communist still holds power.

Okay we are on for starting the league on Monday.

When you post the results of your league game, please copy and paste the document i1989log.txt along with your results and any comments about the game. The log file is automatically generated when you end the game. It is saved in the i1989 folder, and contains information we are tracking about frequency of scoring cards, VPs per scoring card, auto wins for each side, cards drawn for each power struggle and so on. Thanks.

The strategy deck is complete. Here are our final two cards:

The Chinese Solution. This represents one of the regimes deciding to use extreme measures to crackdown on protestors. There is a VP penalty for loss of prestige, but it can payoff if the Communist rolls well. This can only take palce if the Communist has advanced to the Protesters Massacred space on the TS track.

Kremlin Coup! This event represents Gorbachev being ousted from power and hardliners reinstituting the Brezhnev Doctrine. It can only take place if Breakaway Baltic Republics has been played for the event. -3 VPs, and helpful if the Democrat has taken over Elite space(s). Gives the Democrat some fears of pushing too hard too fast aginst Gorbachev.
