"Life is less about money than you think."

This is very, very true - it's about the victory points!

True, but money is the tie-breaker.

Isn't it ironic that people who think life is "less about money" always seem to be the people that HAVE money.

Thinking that money doesn't matter is always a luxury of those who have money.

It is a silly thing to say.

Re: Favorite Quote from Reiner Geekspeak
People have a poor ability to differentiate between needs and wants. This is the crux of "having enough money".

There's also the inability to control oneself. I have a friend who buys magic cards for full retail from Wal-Mart. I told him "stop doing that, you can get them 1/3 off from this online store". He says "but they're right there, I might as well just get them." He fails to understand that I can see something I want and choose not to buy it.

I agree, but in his defense, he didn's say that money doesn't matter. In context, he was (if I remember correctly) talking about moving from one profession (banking) to another (game designing), each of which would probably pay a decent living, and one of which would pay a great deal more.

To expand on what he said, I'd say that, once you have enough money for what you need (defined however you like) additional money is less likely to make you happier. It is the other things--say, job satisfaction, or family, or whatnot, which will make you happier still.

I have not had the chance to listen to the interview yet. I will this Friday. Hopefully. Taken in context it did not come across as irritating as before.

Justin, Acquire isn't a Knizia design, so it doesn't count

(Waiting for the deluge of people who will now go on to list every Knizia game that DOES rely on money to determine the win, we geeks are rather predictable aren't we? )

Actually, it's more about money in the beginning, but more about victory points in the end.

It's a rare game designer who makes a decent living on game design alone.

Buddha tried and rejected asceticism before he attained enlightenment.

Poverty isn't a Buddhist virtue - the Dalai Lama makes phat bank.

Re: Favorite Quote from Reiner Geekspeak
Speaking of Jesus, I am glad you brought him up as it proves my point a bit.

Jesus challenged a rich man who wanted to know how he could follow him. He told the man to give up all of his wealth, and belongings and then he could come with him.

The rich man thought about it and decided he couldnt do it. He had always had the luxury of thinking wealth was not important, until he had been asked to give it up. Then it became all too important.

Point being is that people who HAVE wealth, have a tendancy to undervalue it until they have to give it up. When it comes to putting their money where their mouth is, they fail.

It is as hard for a rich man to get to the kindowm of heaven as it is to thread a camel through the eye of the needle.
So it is impossible?
No, through God all things are possible.

Being "employed" as a teacher means mediocre wages, but it also means regular breaks during spring and winter intercession, not to mention much of Summer. And if I were an English lit. 'crusader' living off the pH4t of the land, you can bet I'd be the kind to leave scorched-earth behind me.

I think this is utter nonsense and poppycock. (Mostly because I wanted to use the word today).

If a person has spent their life understanding how to succeed in a particular manner and you take that manner away from them it's a huge shock! It would be much like taking a car driver's sight or a runner's legs.

They no longer have the tools that have allowed them to live, all the way down to the basics - how does one feed themselves if they cannot see, cannot walk, or have no money?

I don't find this story unusual or enlightening - it's just common sense in my opinion. People who give up something are really doing it symbolically to be able to move on to the next plateu of their existence. It is similar to how priests put on ceremonial robes before they perform services.
