The trickiest part of this game (that I recall) was following the rules of the Red/Blue Die. After re-reading the rules tonight, I realize we played by our own house rules. We played that only the first move had to be in the direction of the color.

Their diagram for what you CAN'T do, shows all the things that are blatantly wrong--all the ways of moving toward the Red, when you rolled blue. But they show no diagram of our method. The first move had to be either down and toward the color, or sideways in the direction of the color, then we could proceed however we felt, except for the rule that you had to advance at least one row during your turn. So we had a little more freedom with our movement, as long as we didn't roll a 1.
