WotE rulebook only states 'monsters advance to the village on any turn in which you do not fight a monster'-- and how is that different from normal level?

On normal and warrior they don't advance the turn after you slay a monster, on nightmare they do. Basically, you won't have time to visit town because every time you do, a monster will escape.

In the normal difficulty, monsters don't advance the turn you kill a monster and the turn after the turn you killed a monster.

In veteran level monsters only advance after you killed a monster if the monster is worth 1 or 2 VP. If it has more VP, you get an additional "peaceful" turn.

In nightmare level monsters advance each turn, no mater if you killed a monster before, or not.

so basically monsters advance no matter what (village/dungeon/rest). And how do you accumulate VPs?

If you go to the Dungeon on Nightmare, monsters don't advance. You just refill the Dungeon.

Umm, by defeating monsters ?

When you advance a monster, it goes to the Monster Score Pile in solo play. When you refill, you move the monsters so that there are no empty spaces, then add a monster to Rank 3. How you do them physically is basically the same (in both you add a monster to Rank 3), but refilling doesn't move a monster to Rank 0 (Monster Score Pile).

Advance (Rank 3/Rank 2/Rank 1):

Monster 3/Monster 2/Monster 1

-> you went to Village for example, so monsters advance. So you get:

Monster 4/Monster 3/Monster 2 (Monster 1 moved to Rank 0, so to the Monster Score Pile)

Refilling:

Monster 3/Monster 2/Monster 1

You go to Dungeon, let's say you attack and defeat Monster 2. After refilling Dungeon looks like:

Monster 4/Monster 3/Monster 1 (Monster 2 is now in your discard pile).

If you fail to defeat Monster 2, Dungeon still looks the same, but M2 goes to the Monster Score Pile.

You refill the dungeon each time there is a gap.

You advance monsters
- each turn you did not go into the dungeon in nigthmare level
- each turn you did not go into the dungeon and you did not slay a monster with more than 2 VP in the previous round in veteran level and
- each turn you did not go into the dungeon and you did not slay a monster in the previous round in normal level.

So you make two checks for normal and veteran level:
Did I go into the dungeon this turn?
If yes, don't advance the monsters, no matter the outcome of the fight.
If no, have you killed a monster in the previous round / with more than 2 VP?
- Yes, don't advance
- No, advance the monsters.

In nightmare level you don't make any checks, you always advance the monsters after refilling possible free spaces in the monster ranks in a turn you did not go into the dungeon.

I think you mean each turn you didn't go to the Dungeon?

"This level uses all the rules used in the Warrior level with only
one change: the Monsters advance to the Village on any turn
in which you do not fight a Monster." (WotE, p. 17)

ok let me try to phrase it correctly now:

Nightmare Level is essentially:
-remove half stacks of all the Heroes and Village cards
-winning/losing a battle against a monster: follow normal level rules, but WITHOUT REPRIEVE TURN!
